I'm a little confused by this release: It came out after Joe's passing yet includes "original liner notes" where Pass talks about how much he enjoyed the sound of the room and wanted to see the tapes released. I'm guessing it was either in the works or shelved while he was still alive.

If so, the likely culprit is the very uneven production.

The initial four tracks sound to me as though he's going direct into the house system and the tape was made straight off the board. Listening through headphones there's a room mic that's panned in at odd moments but overall Joe's tone is very nasal and tonally flat to the point where it detracts from his otherwise fine playing.

The fifth track is mixed primarily from the room mic and sounds much warmer, but it's unfortunately too distant.

By track six the engineer seems to have settled into a mix of primarily board with a bit of room mic that's better but still quite thin compared to the classic warm tone I grew up enjoying from Pass.

If you're a fan who can ignore these kinds of things, this was a fine mid-80's concert from Joe and worth checking out. On the other hand if you're attracted as much by tone as you are by playing, this one doesn't live up to some of Pass's earlier efforts.

This is another of the recent Joe Pass cds put out posthumously. The live cds that I've heard are incredible, and this is no different. Jobim's Wave is a great song to start off the cd.

"Solo guitar means thinking orchestrally and pianistically. The sound at Long Beach College was right for my ears, the audience warm and responsive. I liked the tape enough so I wanted it released. I like it because I found myself playing a little more cohesively and a few things I hadn't heard played by myself before--some new ideas, or old ideas in new places--a feeling that I was in touch with my feelings more, e.g. 'Round Midnight, 'Here's That Rainy Day' and 'Honeysuckle Rose.' I hope you like it. ~ Joe Pass ~

"Blues Dues" is a live concert by Joe Pass that was recorded at Long Beach City College in California. The album was released in the same year by producer Norman Granz under Pablo Records, a trusted name when it comes to quality, first-rate jazz albums. The star of the show was the one and only Joe Pass with his terrific unaccompanied guitar. All it takes to wow his audience was his consistent virtuosity in guitar playing that produced the distinctive, lovely sound of his favorite instrument.

"The pieces I chose are routine, in part out of habit and preference for certain melodies and harmonies that struck my fancy at the time. However, one piece ("Honeysucke Rose" or "Scrapple From The Apple") was a request from a member of the audience." ~ Joe Pass ~

Isn't it awesome that he accommodated a request from one of the audiences? What a wonderful live performer he was!

The repertoire includes Pass' original compositions which he called the "blues," and standards like "All The Things You Are," "Honeysuckle Rose," "'Round Midnight" and "Duke Ellington Sophisticated Lady Melange." He also selected an original tune from harmonica giant Toots Thielemans, "Bluesette" and one of my favorite Brazilian jazz staples from Antonio Carlos Jobim, "Wave.

Buy a copy and listen, in it's entirety, with no distractions. I used to walk in the winter, at night time, when I first "really" listened to this CD. Joe Pass is a great talent who plays very tastefully and off the cuff. If you never listened to Joe Pass before, you will immediately discover the excellence of his playing. I would recommend this to anybody, but especially to any musing guitar player with a desire for better thinking skills. You just feel smarter when you listen to this caliber of musician. Blues Dues by Joe Pass is simply Joe and his guitar.
