5.0 out of 5 stars Joe Pass- Blues Dues, June 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Blues Dues (Audio CD)
This is another of the recent Joe Pass cds put out posthumously. The live cds that I've heard are incredible, and this is no different. Jobim's Wave is a great song to start off the cd.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Playing / Not So Great Production, January 4, 2011

This review is from: Blues Dues (Audio CD)
I'm a little confused by this release: It came out after Joe's passing yet includes "original liner notes" where Pass talks about how much he enjoyed the sound of the room and wanted to see the tapes released. I'm guessing it was either in the works or shelved while he was still alive.

If so, the likely culprit is the very uneven production.

The initial four tracks sound to me as though he's going direct into the house system and the tape was made straight off the board. Listening through headphones there's a room mic that's panned in at odd moments but overall Joe's tone is very nasal and tonally flat to the point where it detracts from his otherwise fine playing.

The fifth track is mixed primarily from the room mic and sounds much warmer, but it's unfortunately too distant.

By track six the engineer seems to have settled into a mix of primarily board with a bit of room mic that's better but still quite thin compared to the classic warm tone I grew up enjoying from Pass.

If you're a fan who can ignore these kinds of things, this was a fine mid-80's concert from Joe and worth checking out. On the other hand if you're attracted as much by tone as you are by playing, this one doesn't live up to some of Pass's earlier efforts.
