Biography

Freddie King also known as Freddy King and "The Texas Cannonball" (born September 3 1934 and died December 28 1976), was an influential African-American blues guitarist and singer. He perfected his own guitar style based on Texas and Chicago influences and was one of the first artists to have a multi-racial backing band on stage with him at live performances. Editorial Reviews

Of the Three 'Kings' of the blues (BB, Albert and Freddy), Freddy King is perhaps the least well known these days. He enjoyed cross-over success with the white rock audiences of the 70s (hitting with albums for Cotillion, RSO and Shelter and touring extensively - his 'live' LP for German label Crosscut is about the closest thing to heavy metal blues imaginable). Yet his death from hepatitis in 1976 robbed Freddy of the kind of acclaim that the current blues revival has given BB, Albert and John Lee Hooker. There was a time, though, in the mid-'60s when his singles were among the most influential in blues, particularly for British and European audiences. His instrumental singles Hideaway and Drivin' Sideways were issued on Sue and covered by every white blues group that knew what was really happening on the R&B scene. Those two sides plus classics like (The Welfare) Turns It's Back On You, See See Baby, The Stumble and San-Ho-Zay were covered by the likes of Eric Clapton, John Mayall, Peter Green, Albert Collins and Chicken Shack. The Influential Early Sessions gathers together all these wonderful sides, made originally in the early '60s for Sy Nathan's Federal and King labels, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the class and power of them remains undiminished to this day.

5.0 out of 5 stars FREDDIE KING: KING OF THE BLUES; FANTASTIC BLUES CD: BLUES MEET ROCK N' ROLL!, January 24, 2011
This review is from: Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions (Audio CD)
For many years I have been collecting music from the beginning and early stages of Rock N' Roll. I have found the exact music where BLUES meet Rock N' Roll on Freddie King's Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions. I can still remember the times when some of these Freddie King BLUES songs were played on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, along with early Rock N' Roll hits. Fourteen of the first fifteen songs on Blues Guitar Hero, volume one, are Freddie King's most famous hits. These fourteen songs are duplicated on two of the other Freddie King cds that I own, Ultimate Collection and Freddy King Sings. These fourteen songs are simply the BEST BLUES MUSIC that I have ever heard! The last eight songs on Blues Guitar Hero, volume one are nearly as outstanding, and gain more credos from me every time I listen to them. There is only one song on Blues Guitar Hero that I have any misgiving about. Blues Guitar Hero, volume one is the most comprehensive collection of Freddie King's best music that I own! Blues Guitar Hero also has outstanding sound quality, perhaps better sound quality than any other Freddie King cd that I own. Blues Guitar Hero very clearly shows us why Freddie King, not B. B. King, is the true King of the Blues. Freddie King is both an outstanding singer and an outstanding guitar player. (B. B. King in his prime was no more than a good singer and a good guitar player.) Freddie King's voice is in its best form on this cd! Blues Guitar Hero, volume one is a FANTASTIC BLUES CD and I most highly recommend it to you! Let me note that there is also a Blues Guitar Hero, volume two, should you simply fall in love with volume one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collection of the best performances of Freddie King., January 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions (Audio CD)
This is a collection of the best performances of Freddie King. Freddie King shares his last name with B.B. and Albert. Unlike B.B. and Albert, Freddie's blues guitar play is more straight. Freddie's early year performance is purely 'blues'. It has no influence from other genres, while B.B. is influenced from gospel and jazz, Albert from funk. Excellent recording quality, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest texas blues CD., April 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Blues Guitar Hero: The Influential Early Sessions (Audio CD)
Freddie is one of the kings of the blues together with B.B. and Albert. Freddie has many albums but the people with educated ears must agree that this CD is the finest texas blues CD by master Freddie King. The performances contained in this CD are of Freddie's early years. Later Freddie got bad influences from rock 'n roll and his blues died. This is the only CD in which you can find the real Freddie texas blues. 'click'
