From Library Journal
This engaging book is not a definitive history of the bittersweet lives of the blues guitar legends, but a collection of profiles and interviews (1974-90) from the pages of Guitar Player magazine. Men like Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son Thomas, Muddy Waters, and John Lee Hooker come alive in their own words, revealing the genius that forever changed popular music and inspired such rock greats as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and dozens of others. Guitar Player magazine's usual fine coverage of biography, technique, equipment, and recording history (including updated discographies) makes for meaty, entertaining reading. Portraits of Robert Johnson and Michael Bloomfield, who both died tragically, are particularly effective. A highly recommended companion to William Barlow's Looking Up at Down: The Emergence of Blues Culture ( LJ 12/1/89).
