Doug Macleod is one of the finest solo exponents of the blues, and his untiring 200-plus-gig annual tour schedule takes him all over the world, giving huge pleasure to fans old and new ... he's one of the diminishing band of white bluesmen who played alongside (and was treated as an equal by) some of the great black practitioners - in Doug's case, Big Joe Turner and the hugely under-rated George 'Harmonica' Smith. The blues are safe in Doug's hands - he cherishes them, and makes them his own, without artifice; he's also a wonderful and truthful writer. And he happens to be one of the most charming and unassuming performers you could wish to meet. There's much to recommend in this DVD package: in particular, the interview section shows Doug being movingly candid about his troubled childhood, amongst other things, while the informal snippets in which he talks about life on the road are revealing of his ability to live with only himself for company. The live concert footage is less satisfactory, for a couple of reasons: first, it's shot in Holland, in front of an audience that presumably doesn't have English as its first language. Doug's performances thrive on his rapport with the punters - he's a wonderful storyteller - and here he seems to be working harder than usual to make that connection. Also, by his own admission, he's recovering from a heavy cold, so his voice isn't at its best. And secondly, the concert sound is a little distorted - on my (admittedly budget) equipment, turning down the volume helps, as it seems over-loud in comparison with the interview material. Having said that, this DVD will be cherished by Doug's followers, and enjoyed by newcomers ... but to see Doug firing on all cylinders, check out some of the on-line Youtube clips, especially those from a recent gig in Liverpool, UK (hand-held camera sound notwithstanding) - now, that's Doug at his best!

4.0 out of 5 stars One for the collection August 11, 2007
By Haney
I saw Doug perform live to a "tunes at twilight" show along the Mississippi river Aug 07. If you are a fan of delta blues resonator (dobro) guitar styles, then this is a gem for your DVD collection. Doug has some good stories to go along with his songs, uses various tunings and plays and sings with a passion that only a "true" man of the blues can.

No regrets at all with this purchase

I have listened to Doug for years but never had the opportunity to see him live. This DVD does that and a lot more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doug MacLeod, "The Blues In Me" DVD July 22, 2008
Doug MacLeod, a bluesman extraordinaire, has been at it since the mid-60's. He has ALWAYS mixed down-home stories with his music and both are very entertaining and make for a good time. Find him on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. In 1967 I found him in a little coffee house, The Folk Ghetto, in Norfolk, Virginia and I've been a fan ever since. This DVD is before a small audience and the interaction between Doug and his audience are what I'm talkin' about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doug's a Dynamo! May 1, 2008

I've been wanting to see him in person for years, since I started reading his articles in "Blues Revue". I still haven't caught him in my area, but I was NOT disappointed by this DVD. He's an extraordinary musician- no guitarist will be able to deny that. His personality draws you right in to his stories, and his easygoing manner belies the intricacies of his playing. What a great stage presence; makes you want to know him personally. Highly recommended, especially for blues enthusiasts.
