5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for Blues Lovers, April 2, 2000
By
This review is from: Blues: A Photographic Documentary (Hardcover)
To truely enjoy the blues one must listen to it live, unfortunately, many of the legends of the blues have long since gone. This photo documentary helps the blues enthusiast to put faces to names and also provide an accurate history of this timeless form of music. This book depicts hard times and times of joy and celebration. The collection of photos is quite extensive and for those of us who enjoy viewing old black and whites, this book is a must have. Old time blues admirers can re-live their past experiences with these truely great men and women or new blues enthusiasts can learn more about those artists who were instrumental in creating the form of music from which Rock and Roll, Country and most modern forms are derived from. This collection really brings the blues to life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHIC ESSAY, September 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Blues: A Photographic Documentary (Hardcover)
This is not a new book, but I only just became aware of it. It's simply beautiful, a large format volume that allows the pin-sharp photos to be seen in all their glory by allocating most of them a whole page. Some of the best blues photographers have their work represented here, including Bill Greensmith, Sylvia Pitcher, Terry Cryer and Valerie Wilmer. These are not hackneyed, over published images; it's likely you'll not have seen most of them before, excepting some obvious prewar plates, but they too are about the best quality reproductions I have ever seen, and Dave Harrison's introduction is a model of good blues writing. It's a treasure.
No need for more words from me; just get it.
