Who knew the US Army maintained one of the finest working jazz big bands in the world?

No hyperbole here. I caught the band performing last month at Blues Alley in DC and was amazed at how tight, robust, proficient and artistic they are. So I obtained the CDs and they havent left my player since.

Note that the track listing above is incorrect. This is an expansive double CD set featuring approx. 25 wonderful original compositions and inspired selections of tunes written by others (e.g., Freedom Jazz Dance) from across the spectrum of styles including New Orleans, bebop, blues, hard bop and contemporary.

Coming to understand that band members are formally educated in music, must audition to be selected, and often stay with the band for 20 or more years, perhaps one shouldnt be surprised at how good they are as soloists and as ensemble players.

See and hear the US Army Blues, and buy this CD, if you enjoy and appreciate the best in jazz performance.

Move over, Count Basie. Step aside, Duke Ellington. The United States Army holds this ground. This group of soldiers delivers hard swinging big band jazz with compositions and arrangements that are absolute knockouts. The ensemble playing is powerful precision and the soloists lay down the blues and the abstract truth with authority. If you like big bands, this is it, baby.
