4.0 out of 5 stars Soulful blues!, August 27, 2009
By
This review is from: Blues for You (Audio CD)
"Blues For You" is a great Smooth Jazz album, which shows why Jeff Golub has established a fine reputation as an exquisite guiter player and jazz musician.
His guitar playing takes an aesthetic cue from the great exponents of the instrument, especially Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Lee Ritenour, and Larry Carlton, among others.
He is quite capable of playing straight-ahead bop and for sure he has all the skills for it.
But like any creative soul musician he is willing to embrace influences and ideas from any genre that passes him by, adding a fresh and acutely contemporary aspect to his playing.
On this album, which wires definitely towards the blues, Jeff Golub's fine style is perfectly suited to relaxed Smooth Jazz.
The result is a soulful blend of jazz and modern electric rock/blues.
The album features Shawn Pelton on drums , Tony Garnier on bass, and Kenny White on keyboards to round out the rhythm section.
Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum and Jon Clearly also join in.
For the first time, you will find some vocal tunes : in fact the band adds their own special magic alongside guest vocals from vocalists Billy Squier on the track "Everybody Wants You", Mark Cohn on "I Don't Worry About a Thing", Peter Wolf on "Rooster Blues" and John Waite on "Lost Mind".
The album exudes mastery with his virtuoso guitar solos and the production and sound are top-notch
"Blues For You" will appeal to lovers of Blues/Soul and Smooth Jazz, catch a master at work.
My highlights: "Fish Fare", "Rooster Blues" and "Everybody Wants You".

5.0 out of 5 stars "If you can sit still while Jeff Golub plays, then I'd see a doctor", September 18, 2009
This review is from: Blues for You (Audio CD)
Koch Records. presents "BLUES FOR YOU" --- Jeff Golub has four vocal songs on this album, unlike his previous albums --- . He calls on vocalists Billy Squier on the track "Everybody Wants You," Marc Cohn on "I Don't Worry About a Thing" and the legendary Peter Wolf on "Rooster Blues" and John Waite on "Lost Mind." --- Hear how the band follows in sync with Jazz, Blues and Rock blends that will keep your feet tapping.

Opening track is a groovy "SHUFFLEBOARD", which just happens to set the mood to this musical experience --- Give this album an ... A-A-A-A-A-A-Plus!!

Blues for You the titles and times:

1 Shuffleboard 3:28
2 Rooster Blues (with Peter Wolf) 3:35
3 Goin' On (Kirk Whalum) 5:54
4 Everybody Wants You (with Billy Squire) 5:39
5 The Blink of an Eye 6:02
6 I Don't Worry About a Thing (with Marc Cohn) 3:39
7 Nikki's Walk 5:05
8 Lost Mind (with John Waite) 3:20
9 Gone Fishin' 4:15
10 Fish Fare 4:57
11 I'll Play the Blues for You 6:02

My favorite tracks are "THE BLINK OF AN EYE" and I'LL PLAY THE BLUES FOR YOU", both are gut wrenching soulful performances that take you into another world and dimension.

Hats off to Marc Cohn (Vocals), Billy Squier (Acoustic Guitar Vocals), John Waite (Vocals), Peter Wolf (Vocals), Rick Braun (Trumpet), Jon Cleary (Piano), Tony Garnier (Electric Bass), Bud Harner (Vocals), Nick Lane (Trombone), Chris Palmaro (Hammond Organ), Shawn Pelton (Percussion, Drums), Kirk Whalum (Saxophone) --- thanks to Koch Records we can all enjoy this one of a kind musical journey to our roots of Blues and Jazz, with Rock thrown in for good measure --- brings back some good old memories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Blues, September 17, 2009
This review is from: Blues for You (Audio CD)
Having enjoyed the work of Jeff Golub for some time, including Avenue Blue and his jazz work, I looked forward to receiving his new CD. I wasn't disappointed. It's one of the best blues CDs I have heard. It incorporates some of Jeff's own compositions as well as some blues standards. The Blink of an Eye is hauntingly beautiful and demonstrates just what can be done with a guitar - you can almost imagine it's having a conversation with you. I was surprised to hear a Lancashire accent on Lost Mind - but being English and originating from Lancashire it was instantly discernable! Excellent rendition of Everybody Wants You with Bill Squier. Altogether very well worth owning - currently being played to death in my car!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite Jazz Guitarist....and then some!, May 31, 2011
This review is from: Blues for You (Audio CD)
We have been fans of Jeff Golub since Avenue Blue. Jazzy, Soulful, Bluesey...he can play them all. This blues departure from his usual Jazz CD's is welcome and appreciated. Even his Jazz tracks often seemed rooted in the Blues, so it is no surprise that he would issue a CD that was pure blues. We love it.

Incredible!! Jeff Golub is without a doubt, one of the greatest guitarist I've had the pleasure of listening to! Being a fan of screaming guitars and smooth jazz, this latest CD is over the top! The 4th cut with Billy Squier doing "Everybody Wants You" is some of the greatest slide guitar you will ever hear......check it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Latest and Greatest, September 27, 2009

If you are a Jeff Golub fan, you must have this C.D. It is a fantastic blend of rock, blues, and of course, jazz. I really couldn't find a "weak" track on it, and can easily listen to it over and over again. (I use the "random" button to change the order.) The guest vocals were a hoot. "American Idol" stresses to artists they should make each tune their own. Try listening to Everybody Wants You here. Same great vocal, but wow, what a makeover. Golub is for you no matter what he plays, but if you like the blues, Blues for You is especially for you.
