Editorial Reviews

Chris Davis, Memphis Flyer, Feb 22, 2001

This Memphis superband can deliver the soulful, spirited, and often very funny sounds that first made Beale Street famous...

I fell asleep listening to this CD and dreamed I was drunk in a whorehouse...

A rootsy acoustic brew that evokes the city's sweet, lazy, jazzy past...

Product Description

The self-titled debut from the Memphis-based Bluff City Backsliders delivers high-powered, hip-shaking, barrelhouse hoodoo music that's as profane as it is glorious. Finger-plucked guitar, high-dollar fiddle, vamping banjos, bottleneck and lap-style reson. Yellow Dog.2004

5.0 out of 5 stars sublime and timeless, June 24, 2010

The Bluff City Backsliders own the jug band revival market. Straight from Memphis, the Backsliders blend ghost styles with post-modern glee and timeless fervor. Throaty vocals, slide guitar, fiddle, piano, mandolin, drums, upright bass, and trombone cross genres, creating a wholly new sensibility. Just wonderful. I have seen the band live over the past decade and it is an experience: generations dance together. Buy now and revel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Music. The Vocals? Not So Much., January 16, 2010

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Bluff City Backsliders (Audio CD)
Terrific instrumental performances featuring a well-chosen selection of early jazz and blues tunes from Memphis, the band's hometown. The musical arrangements are also wonderful. The problem? The vocals are terrible.

For the most part, the singing is crude and without charm. It undercuts everything the band achieves musically. A competent vocalist would have saved this project, but as is, this is largely unlistenable. It's too bad, because I can tell these guys love this music.
