Book Description

May 24, 2011
Welcome to Memphis, a.k.a. Bluff City. Hope you brought your camera, because no one's going to believe you when you tell them what you've seen.

Luther Washington is the last of the great bluesmen, a legend now reduced to playing a fourth-rate Mississippi casino bar. But when two down-on-their-luck gamblers, flat busted and cleaned out from a bad night’s run at the casino tables, decide to kidnap Luther, he suddenly becomes famous all over again. Everyone from white supremacists to church congregations wants to get their hands on the old bluesman, and things descend into bad craziness in a hurry. In the mix are a housewife who finds her true calling as a grifter; a disgraced former heavyweight champ seeking a shot at redemption; a hotshot sportswriter running for his life after writing a too-revealing profile of the city’s star athlete; and a reverend who knows a lot more about the kidnapping than he’s telling his flock. The whole crew comes together at the Elvis Brawl, a worldwide pay-per-view extravaganza starring wrestling Elvis impersonators, while outside, the city nears its boiling point...

Bluff City will have you packing your bags for Memphis--and locking your door once you get there.

I'm Not Bluffing! June 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
No mincing words...this book is hilarious! (Put saran wrap on your Kindle to protect the screen because you'll be doing spit takes with laughter!) You are drawn in immediately and blistering pace of the plot holds your attention - it NEVER slows, and just when you think you can take a breath, something NEW is introduced. And then it's like, "Oh..NO..." and you do NOT want to put the Kindle down!

The characters are well written, you either love 'em or hate 'em; there are good guys and bad guys and it's a toss up until the very end who exactly is going to win out. And even though this is one hell of a funny book, there is enough drama to put a knot in your gut during a few tense moments.

"Bluff City" pokes fun at more than a few southern traditions and sacred cows, but there is an underlying tone of affection for the city of Memphis and its musical contribution to the soul of America.

I loved every page, and am looking forward to Jay Busbee's next book in the fall.

Great All Around June 15, 2011

Great characters, great setting, great story, great writing...I guess you get the picture. If you're into Dorsey and Hiaasen, then pick this one up...but watch out, you won't put it down.

Never been to Memphis, but this book just made me add it to the list. Can't wait for the next Jay Busbee offering.

OK, you've read the summary above and now you're wondering what others have thought of it before you jump in.

It is funny as hell. If someone else is in the room they will ask you what is so funny and why you are laughing out loud.

It is probably NOT the book you will be discussing at the church luncheon. But you may already know that.

If you've wondered what would happen if Carl Hiaasen or Dave Barry moved from Florida to Memphis, read this. Yes, Jay is that good.
