Editorial Reviews

Review

"Fed up with the winning-my-first-cap-was-great school of biography? Then try The Bluffer's Guide to Rugby by Alexander Rae, a former player for Kintyre, in Scotland. His tome is dedicated to those who play on life's back pitches and has useful definitions such as covering the blind-side - "The art of being on the side of the pitch where nothing is happening". "
--The Sunday Times

"Ideal reading if you want to spout off without actually knowing about the game."
--Oldham Evening Chronicle

From the Back Cover

People often say about Rugby "I wouldn't like to play rugby. I wouldn't like to get hurt." This shows a basic lack of understanding the game. No rugby player likes to get hurt. You don't go on to the pitch to get hurt. You go on to the pitch to hurt other people. Fed up with the winning-my-first-cap-was-great school of biography? Then try this guide by Alexander Rae, a former player for Kintrye, in Scotland. His tome is dedicated to those who play on life's back pitches and has useful definitions such as covering the blind side - "The art of being on the side of the pitch where nothing is happening". Bluffer's Guides is a series of snappy little books containing facts, jargon, and all you need to know for instant expertise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A psychotic flanker recalls, June 17, 2003

This review is from: The Bluffer's Guide to Rugby: Bluff Your Way in Rugby (Bluffers Guides) (Paperback)
I've played rugby for about twenty years. If only I had this when I started I could have avoided many needless trips to the emergency room.

The humor is great with much truth presented in so few pages. Late tackles sticks in my mind, having played flanker/wing forward I always thought the rules never fully allowed enough leeway for really great tackles to be waived off, even if they were late.....by three or four days.

This book should be handed to all prospective rugby players, excepting front rows as they probably wouldn't get the subtle humor.
