Book Description

December 15, 2008
The Bluford Series is a collection of FIFTEEN young adult novels that focus on the lives of a group of high school students and their families. The series draws its name from the school which many of the characters attend: Bluford High, named after Guion "Guy" Bluford, America's first black astronaut. Set in contemporary urban America, each novel addresses complex topics relevant to the lives of today's students: family, friendship, trust, isolation, violence, and peer pressure, to name a few. In addition, the books feature male and female characters and include elements from many literary genres, such as mystery, suspense, romance, and a touch of the supernatural. In other words, the Bluford Series offers something for almost every reader. Finally, the books are short (less than 200 pages) and written in a highly readable style. Reviewed in a national reading journal and praised by students and teachers nationwide, the Bluford Series appeals to readers of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

Review

One of the most popular new series of adolescent literature is the Bluford Series . . . Students love the books regardless of their background. --Rosemarye T. Taylor, author of Improving Reading, Writing, and Content Learning for Students in Grades 4-12.

The Bluford Series are contemporary texts that engage teachers and students alike. --Dale Moxle, author of Literacy Coaching, a Handbook for School Leaders.

"The second book (used with the class) was The Bully by Paul Langan, and it took the next six periods of eighth-grade classes by storm. I was no more than 2 paragraphs into reading my chosen chapter when I could tell from the absolute silence that the audience was hookedSilence gave way to choral groans and laughter before a tense moment resulted in silence again and finally cheers when the protagonist, a small bullied ninth grader named Darrell, confronted the school bully Tyray, unexpectedly in the school cafeteria and sent him sprawling in a pool of spilled spaghetti. " --James Blasingame from Books That Don't Bore 'Em, Scholastic, New York, NY. 2007

5.0 out of 5 stars Teacher Hearts Bluford, May 18, 2009
By
This review is from: Bluford Series Boxed Set, Books 1-15 (Paperback)
I teach international students English in an Atlanta ex-urb. It is very difficult to get my kids engaged in reading, especially when some of them have only just arrived in this country. Finding texts that interest teens and are accessible to them is a rarity. However, one of my students raved about the Bluford Series. Since this was a child who spent much of his class time trying to listen to his IPod, I was very interested and decided to buy the 15-book boxed set. The first day that I passed the box around the class, the students spent the whole period reading. They did the same thing on the second day! My students--and I--are thrilled. THANKS!!

I bought this boxed set for my daughter's students who are in 8th grade in Harlem. They were so excited to receive these books just before winter break! They called me a left a message on my answering machine thanking me repeatedly for sending the books. My daughter reports that her students devour these books. So, I sent her another set for her students.

I read the entire series myself and then decided that I would share it with my granddaughters. I have throughly enjoyed reading these books with my students. They are able to identify with the content. Very well written for students of all ages.
