Better than expected,

We recently did a remodel, and I ran across these Blum soft closing adapters in the cabinet showroom at Home Depot. They looked good, but I was skeptical and decided to order a few from Amazon (best price) and try them out. They are GREAT! They are well designed, easy to install and easy to adjust. They worked so well that I have now installed nearly 30 of them in virtually every cabinet in the house. I have put them on everything from large pantry cabinet doors to tiny over-the-fridge cabinet doors. Because the closing action is adjustable, they work great on every door I have tried them on. I read somewhere that they only work with Blum hinges, but that clearly isn't correct, because none of my hinges are Blum hinges and they all work fine. The soft close units should come individually packaged in a plastic bag with two screws and a plastic adapter. If you have full overlay cabinet doors (doors that extend well beyond the opening) then you use the short screw and no adapter. If you have partial overlay cabinet doors (doors only slightly bigger than the opening, with most of the style between doors is exposed) then you use the plastic adapter and the long screw. I had read that you needed a flexible shaft for your drill to install these, but I wasn't clear on why it was needed? I thought maybe it was because the drill would be too long to fit into the opening of a narrow cabinet. It turns out the you really do need that flexible shaft and the reason has nothing to do with the length of your drill. It has everything to do with the diameter of your drill. For most drills, even my close-quarters drill, the centerline of the bit is too far from the closest edge of the drill to allow you to drill a straight pilot hole for the screw parallel to the top of the cabinet. You need the flexible shaft because its smaller diameter allows you to drill parallel to the top of the cabinet. I found the flexible shaft to be absolutely necessary to get these soft closers installed correctly. Finally, a tip for easy installation is to put the screw into the mounting hole of the soft closer, place the closer in position, and then use a screw driver to force the screw into the wood a tiny bit to create a pilot mark for your drill bit in exactly the right spot. It works perfectly and makes the install quick and foolproof.

I bought one of these to test out, and it works fantastically on my partial overlay cabinets. Better than every other damper I tried.
So... I was going to order 20 more from this seller, until I realized that I was going to have to pay $4.99 in S&H on EACH piece! That's outrageous! Instead, I found another online seller that was asking just $0.23 more per damper, but only $8 total in S&H for 20 pieces. So I saved myself $87.20 in total. This seller should get its act together and change their shipping costs formula.

I ordered a couple to try them out. After skeptically installing them I must admit they performed well. No more slammed doors or load noise when the doors close. Push the door and let it go, it will do the rest! The are engagemnet is adjustable. They are fairly easy to install and aren't as unsightly as I thought they would be. My only issue was trying to drill a pilot hole that was not on angle due to the tight corner. You should try to drill level if you can. Be advised screws are not included. Since the kitchen personnel(wife) likes it I will do the rest of the doors. Its a nice upgrade! Product gets 5 stars, installation 4 stars since the hole is not angled.
