Book Description

October 1, 2010
A global sports phenomenon, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has taken the world of full-contact sport by storm. In these high-octane clashes, highly trained and conditioned fighters go head-to-head, using a combination of boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, Ju-Jitsu and Judo, to overcome their opponent in the cage. Despite only becoming recognized a sport in the last 15 years, MMA has now eclipsed boxing and WWE (wrestling) in the United States - and is currently second only to the NFL as the most popular sport in the US. Drawing average crowds of 20,000 fans, with 6 million+ pay-per-view subscribers to premiere events, this isn't just a US phenomenon either; in the UK, audiences of 15,000+ attend the largest events, while Japan has seen audiences in excess of 70,000 fans attending bouts that see fighters travelling from all parts of the globe. "Blunt Force Trauma" is the unique story of Mixed Martial Arts as seen through the lens of fighter/photographer Lee Whitehead, who has followed the meteoric rise of the sport. His knowledge and experience put him in an unrivalled position to capture both the savagery and ferocity they exhibit in the cage, as well as a side of MMA that the public rarely sees - the humanity and humility of these modern-day gladiators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed, Gritty, Real and Inspiring November 24, 2010
Format:Hardcover
I just received my copy of Blunt Force Trauma, via the Amazon.UK site. Needless to say, I no longer need a Christmas, seeing as this is one of the coolest things I have ever owned. Lee Whitehead did an amazing job documenting the life and fighters of Mixed Martial Arts.

The photos are detailed, gritty, real and inspiring - giving everyone a glimpse into what makes MMA so intense ... and so flippin' wonderful. Fighters are captured in all stages of the training, fighting, winning and losing - making these guys (and girls) more real. Between the photos and commentary I learned more about the sport than in all the websites I have ever visited.

When I first saw a copy of this book at the Grudge Training Center in Denver earlier this month, I knew I needed a copy. I went to the local book stores and to Amazon.com and found nothing. Apparently, there have been some distribution issues in the US ... But a book this cool HAD to be available somewhere for us American MMA fans!

I DO wish it was available in the US for the millions of US MMA fans. However, even ordering through the UK site was well WORTH it and was the best $34.95 USD you can spend on an AWESOME full-color hardcover 192 page book showcasing MMA.

Thank you, Mr. Whitehead, for putting this book together and for sharing with the world, one picture at a time, why MMA is so fricken' cool.
