5.0 out of 5 stars Old-fashioned, sweet stories, great images! September 20, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because it was vintage-looking (and vintage-reading) and I like old nature books. It met expectations on all counts. Plus, the colored plates inside are spectacular--really wonderful nature art. The stories are sweet and follow the adventures of a group of siblings who learn about nature from an educated neighbor. The book is organized seasonally and also has a collection of Blyton's poetry in the back, which I didn't know about. Although the nature focused on that found on the English seashore and what is found in the UK, I still enjoyed it very much. This is a great read-along book for the child who likes nature stories and innocent adventures, perhaps of ages 5 and up. Those who like the Diary of a Country Lady will like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love nature and this book educates May 11, 2013

This very attractive book is a reminder of all the wonderful plant and bird life in England.
Well-written book with lovely drawings and paintings. A good teaching tool if you like natural science and have children-or if you want to recognize what you are looking at when out for a walk.
The author takes you for walks throughout the four seasons along with the book's characters (children and their guide) where you share their observations.
An example is one common experience of children in the past-exploring pond life and finding tadpoles to put in an old jam jar. Here you learn about lifecycles. Can't over-emphasize the lovely color illustrations that go along with the story.
Book came in excellent condition (beautiful cover) and on time.
