5.0 out of 5 stars On Board the Armenia, March 1, 2004

This review is from: On Board the Armenia (Audio CD)
Worldgrass by Athens band Calliope Fair. Music from the Balkans, the Middle-East, Europe and the Americas. Mostly female vocals (three singers on this CD) and acoustic instrumentation, except for that one electric guitar that seems out of place. Because of the wide array of instruments and cultural eclecticism, this is close to the music and spirit of The Incredible String Band minus the lyrics. A couple of tracks go off charts with bland arrangements and overproduction, e.g. 'Silver Dagger' - a gorgeous song Calliope Fair has often performed live without all the bells and whistles, but with much more heart. Running at over 70 minutes, the CD could've done without the semi-rock tracks. Calliope Fair is a different band these days: some core members remain, others are gone, and their live shows often feature guest musicians - offering a great variety in dynamics and instrumentation. I hope they put out a live CD, it would be a better representation of their music than this sometimes sterile studio effort.
