The description for this item mentions you can write easily with chalk....but beware....this isn't a typical chalk board like you remember from school.....there's a reason this sells for such a small price......very poor quality...chalk can hardly be seen...be wary.....

I got this for a friend who gets excited whenever he writes on a chalkboard (he wants to be a teacher, what can I say) expecting it to be cool and smooth as the chalkboards I'm used to in class, but I was deceived. These chalkboards have a plastic, almost bumpy feel to them. The chalkboard is extremely thin (which can be a plus for children, since they are light and not dangerous during earthquakes and such). The chalkboard writes just fine, though, despite the odd not-chalkboard feel, the white chalk shows up bright and clear on the chalkboard.

I was expecting more of an authentic chalkboard feel, but if you're looking for just a black board to use chalk on, this is an okay, lightweight board to purchase. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

A good chalkboard for the money. I primed it as a commenter suggested in a previous review (by rubbing the side of chalk all over the board's surface). Afterward the chalk wrote on the board fine, and I pressed normally. Good value.
