Product Description

Kate Stevens needs a daddy for her baby-to-be. Candidates must be dependable, stay-at-home family men who don't rush off to sea every time the wind changes. Patrick Berzani need not apply. The adventure-loving sailor may be the baby's biological father, but he's far from daddy material.

Patrick thought he and Kate were great together before, but now? They could be even better. And for Kate to believe he wouldn't be a good father to his child, well, Patrick has something to say about that, too! He just has to convince Kate. So while she interviews prospective daddies, Patrick plans to prove he's the ideal--the only--father for their child. And the man Kate loves and needs.

4.0 out of 5 stars fine contemporary, January 15, 2009
Glass artist Kate Stevens makes a difficult decision when she learns she is pregnant. She decides to hide the truth from the father, boat racer Patrick Berzani. He has never made any time for her as his prime interest is racing; and believes he would be an absentee father, which is not a good dad for a baby.

During his last event, Patrick was away for three months; in that time he sent no email, no text message, no flowers, and one phone call. She decides the party animal will not hurt their child when he fails to be there. Kate begins seeking someone else to be the father of her child. However, Patrick learns of the pregnancy and Kate's campaign; he begins his own to prove to her will be a good husband and will be a great father if she gives him a chance.

Although the topic of hiding a child from the father has been done many times before, BABY ON BOARD is refreshed by Patrick's awareness before his offspring is born. His efforts to prove he will be there for Kate and their child make for a fine tale, but neither him nor her come across as empathetic as each seems stubbornly selfish. Still Lisa Ruff provides a fine contemporary maybe a family drama.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, light read., May 10, 2009
If there's one thing Kate Stevens knows for sure, it's that life is full of surprises. Take her present situation for example. Who would have thought she'd be conducting a search for the perfect candidate to become a father to her unborn baby? Funny how everything seemed idyllic in her simple life at FireWorks, the shop she co-owns with her Aunt Molly. Together, they create works of art, she with her furnace and Molly with her kiln. Making a baby was most certainly not on her agenda.

Patrick Berzani is an adventurous guy looking for the latest thrill to keep his wanderlust soul engaged. The sea is his master, keeping him adrift while his life takes twists and turns along its circuitous route. Little did he expect that someone like Kate would capture his heart with her infectious smile and luscious lips. As far as he is concerned, this baby that their love created is the nautical knot that will keep them afloat forever.

Too bad Kate begs to differ with his unrealistic ideas of bliss as she earnestly tries to prove to herself and others that Pat is not the right candidate for the job. Sure, he is the baby's biological father, but isn't her first responsibility to her child and not to her lover? She needs a man who is not afraid of settling down, and especially one who prefers stability as opposed to risk. If only she hadn't let Pat get so close. How is she going to be able to pick the right dad when being around Patrick causes her fickle heart to betray her with every beat?

BABY ON BOARD is the second novel by the talented Lisa Ruff for Harlequin's AMERICAN ROMANCE SERIES. As with her first, MAN OF THE YEAR, Ruff once again demonstrates her brilliance as she transports her reader to the high seas complete with crashing waves of heartache and tender moments of love. By far the perfect winter escape, BABY ON BOARD sails off into the sunset.
