4.0 out of 5 stars Boarder zone review
This game is one of the great underapreciated games of the past few years. It is not flawless, The Halfpipe is poorly modeled and the limited selection of music gets annoying very very quickly. Boarder Zone is the best looking snowboarding game yet. This game's designers have given remarkable attention to detail. From the character design and backgrounds to the gleams of light which reflect off individual snowflakes, this one makes you feel like you're actually snowboarding. Snowboard sims of the past have lacked the in snow feeling that Boarder Zone provides, whether it be riding, jumping, or (shudder) crashing. Yes, the crashes in this game will make you want to stay indoors where it's warm and safe! In contrast to its great looks, excellent level design, and stunningly precise game play, the game falls short in a few important areas. First, the game controller buttons can't be configured within the game, and this makes customizing your controller difficult. Second, the game loads uncomfortably slowly between levels. Even with a superior system (the system requirements for this game are quite demanding), the wait becomes intolerable after time. If you already own X-games Pro Boarder (the best PC snowboard game yet), I would definitely recommend Boarder Zone. Otherwise, I'd save a few bucks and try that game first.

This game is one of the great underapreciated games of the past few years. It is not flawless, The Halfpipe is poorly modeled and the limited selection of music gets annoying very very quickly. That being said there are many more redeeming features than condemning ones. The Method of performing tricks is brilliant as well as the physics which are some of the best i have ever seen in any game period. The levels are huge and diverse and each one can be replayed thousands of times and still remain fresh and new. This game is Vvery very good and as it is older it is quite reasonably priced. A must for anyone with even a passing interest in snowboarding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Boarder zone is IN DA ZONE, August 10, 2002
This review is from: Boarder Zone (CD-ROM)
Boarder Zone is a very cool game. It is very reallistic, with the levels, animation and boards. There are three types of ways to board: time race, BIG air, and half-pipe. There is also a practice level, which ,I think, is the best one in the game. I didn't give it 5 stars because it can be kind of boring after playing it a while.

4.0 out of 5 stars For casual players, January 7, 2010

Quick version: It's very limited, but also very inexpensive. If you are only a casual gamer, you might enjoy this better than a newer, more expensive game anyway. I found the documentation (which is only on the CD, there was no printed manual) lacking on one or two points, and the game locked up under certain conditions, but surprisingly neither one of those problems are a serious problem.

Obviously, this game is outdated. But you wouldn't be looking at the reviews if you wanted a cutting-edge game. Do you just want to try a snow boarding game without paying much money? Are you NOT an intense gamer? Don't have that amazing fast-twitch reflex ability? Not interested in competing and setting records? Would you like a game that just lets you relax a bit, and doesn't demand that you score high and/or keep improving to enjoy it? Try this one.

I have been looking for a good skiing simulator for years. There aren't any. I tried a couple, and they both required intense skills -- tap the buttons frantically yet with perfect precision, or you crash and "game over, man!" Bleagh. But I found the demo version of Boarder Zone years ago and found it came as close as I could expect of a computer simulation to bringing back the memories and feel of my younger days when I was in ski school. You can zoom in to first-person view (using F1 and F2, not the "C" key as the documentation says) and easily imagine "being there" although the graphics aren't up to todays standards. The courses are far beyond anything you'd find at any earthly resort, yet even for a casual gamer like me they're not impossible to complete without crashing. Better yet, wiping out can be spectacular and part of the fun, and never has to be the end of your run.

I found that the full version crashed under certain conditions, but only in Championship mode and the Arcade Races. This may keep the hard courses locked up. But for the price, who cares? Just stick to the practice run and all the Arcade modes that aren't so competitive. Timed Attack is my favorite. The easy and medium levels of the Alpine, River and Village downhill runs are plenty for me, with the "Big Air" and halfpipe options providing some extra variety. I like to use the joystick for a more intuitive, submersive experience, although the documentation is lacking. You can practice to your heart's content and discover how to pull off amazing spins and flips without having to memorize complex sequences of buttons (zoom out for better viewing of the action in these modes).

4.0 out of 5 stars Boarder Zone missing some key points, March 17, 2001
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Boarder Zone (CD-ROM)
Hi! I just got boarder zone today and it is really fun! But it's missing some key things a snowboarding game should have. For example, most snowboarding games have some kind of half pipe, but this game does not have that. Another thing is that it does not have many optional courses to choose from, and it only has 2 modes, trick attack and racing. My opinion is that you should only get this game if you are a snowboarding game fan. Other wise, you should probaly get a diffrent game because this game will get boring really fast if you aren't a huge fan of snowboarding! But for a game boy game, this game passes out every other snowboarding game on the market!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, June 3, 2000
This review is from: Boarder Zone (CD-ROM)
The graphics for this game are simply jaw-dropping. Someone said buy X-Games instead but I disagree! The runs are HUGE and very wide open in places, all kinds of shortcuts and whatnot, massive airs, the list goes on and on. If you have the bandwidth to spare I *strongly* suggest you download the demo -- it will speak for itself. Click the link above to see some screenshots too, it really looks that good on a decent machine! Awesome.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun, yet lack of variety, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Boarder Zone (CD-ROM)
The graphics in this game are stellar, dude! But that's all that's good in this half-baked game, dude. C dude, cuz when U start the game, U R treated with a TV- style introduction showing people fall in snow that takes about 10 minutes 2 load on a top-of-the-line computer, dude! Then, U R sent 2 the main menu, which consists of a bunch of options, dude! And when U play it, U get a chance 2 snowboard poorly, and it ain't your fault, because the games controls R mind-boggling and confusing, man! The manual does not help at all 2 help U understand this snowy mess off a PC game. So, dude, if your looking 4 a good snowboarding game, go buy a N64 and 1080. That's probably the only good snowboard game out there, man .
