Editorial Reviews

Boardwalk Empire Volume 1 Music From The HBO Original Series features music from the first two seasons of the show. The Prohibition-era soundtrack, produced by the series music supervisor Randall Poster, is comprised of original music from the 1920s exclusively rerecorded by top contemporary artists such as Regina Spektor, Loudon Wainwright III, Martha Wainwright, Catherine Russell, Nellie McKay and Leon Redbone. Regina Spektor s version of "My Man, " was originally made popular in 1921 by Ziegfeld Follies singer Fanny Brice.

The show features famous, real-life musical characters from the time period such as vaudeville star Eddie Cantor played by Stephen DeRosa and singer/actress Sophie Tucker played by Hairspray s Kathy Brier. Each actor/singer contributes to Boardwalk Empire Volume 1 Music From The HBO Original Series contemporary versions of the songs made popular by these 1920s musicians. What s more, current day New York jazz band Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks appear regularly on the series as the house band at Babette s Nightclub, and the group contributes five modern-day renditions of popular songs from the era.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW September 14, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have been a longtime fan of Vince Giordano & I have anticipated this release for a long time.
It is outstanding. Vince is responsible for all the music on Boardwalk-Empire. His good taste & excellent musicianship are without peer. I'm 73 years old & have been collecting music from the early jass/pop era for over 50 years. His singers are tremendous. Each fits exactly with the tune they sing. One thing that struck me was the the heavy drumbeat driving the songs. I imagine that in a real club ( as in the show )
it was needed for the dancers. Those of accustomed to the old 78's will be pleasantly surprised. In the early recording industry the drums were very muted and frequently replaced by the tapping of the woodblock.
I thought I'd heard every song from the era. I have heard tens of thousands of recordings. Even so he supprised me with a couple that are brand new to me.

The quality of this recording is outstanding Despite it's terrific old time music it deserves a Grammy nomination.

5.0 out of 5 stars SETTLING OLD SCORES October 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Vince Giordano has devoted his life to the pursuit of the jazz and big band music of the twenties and thirties. His interest was kindled at the age of five by a cache of 78s in granny's attic, and by the age of fifteen he was a working musician. His passion has developed in several directions, including collecting early sheet music and extant arrangements, transcribing other arrangements from shellac recordings, and recreating these sonic masterpieces through the medium of his New York based 11-piece Nighthawks Orchestra.

Martin Scorsese has become increasingly interested in the creation of what used to be known as period films, the period in question being the early part of the twentieth century. He and Vince have worked together in the past, most notably on the film "The Aviator", but the series "Boardwalk Empire" reaches new heights, as witness this first volume of soundtrack music. It kicks off with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band's warhorse "Livery Stable Blues", replete with the whinnying effects which so startled listeners in 1917.

The tracklist credits favour the vocalists, but all but one of the accompaniments is provided by Vince's orchestra, the exception being the haunting Irish ballad Carrickfergus. I particularly enjoyed Regina Spektor's vocal on "My Man" which may sound syncopated by comparison with thirties recordings, but which accurately reflects its origins as a French vaudeville number. Kathy Brier gives a barnstorming rendition of Sophie Tucker's theme song "Some of these Days", and Leon Redbone's laidback approach to "The Sheik of Araby" is a delight. The inclusion of "Japanese Sandman" is particularly appropriate because Paul Whiteman secured his Victor contract at the phonograph company's 1920 convention in Atlantic City, and it was his first recording.

Every track of this CD is a delight, and a number of forgotten gems are included. Sound quality is nothing short of stupendous, and I envy New Yorkers, who can hear the Nighthawks in person at Sofia's Restaurant at the Edison Hotel every Monday and Tuesday evening.

NOTE: This CD has been nominated for a Grammy for best compilation soundtrack for visual media.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite What I Expected October 27, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Here's a heads up to all of you out there who are thinking of buying this CD. I think the show is great, as is the music, but I ordered this CD primarily because I really enjoy the opening song. For some reason, this is not included among the sixteen tracks in this compilation. It's like buying the "Sopranos" soundtrack without "Woke Up This Morning." If the exclusion of the theme song doesn't matter to you, fine. But I just wanted you to be able to make an informed decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great effort by a modern cast.
The tracks cover a few only, of the featured songs. The 3 CD set of the original artists is better for a wide spread, but the quality of this is excellent.
