Editorial Reviews

Review

At last, a book that covers handling every type of boat under every form of power: dinghies, runabouts, sail and power yachts and multihulls. It looks at handling boats powered by outboards, I/Os, twin and single screw inboard engines, and vessels with bow thrusters....The book is honeycombed with clear, simple diagrams that support brief, concise text. Is there anyone reading this review who could not benefit from learning something more about handling their boat under power? -- Dockside, June 1998

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner, October 9, 2000

This review is from: Boat Handling Under Power: A Motorboat and Yacht Owners' Guide (Paperback)
This is a difficult book for the begining boater. The author uses many obscure words and phrases without explaining them. No information is given about the author, but the British spelling makes me think he lives overseas. Perhaps that is why so many words are obscure. The experienced boater may gain something, but then he or she probably already knows most of the information in this book.

I have my captain's license and teach at a large sailing school. I have read lots of books on boat handling for my own edification as well as gathering material to help students. This book is the best I've seen. It covers virtually every prop/ hull combination, up wind/down wind, up current/down current docking and many others. It uses good illustrations and very clear explanations and has great solutions to get you out of common boat-handling mistakes. I recommend it to all my advanced students.
