4.0 out of 5 stars Built it, don't just read it!, September 23, 2006
By T. J. Barnes (Los Gatos, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book contains the detailed building instructions for a lovely little sailing dinghy, with a surprising turn of speed. She is built from marine play, using stitch-and-glue techniques. The instructions are clear, but it's not always easy - building a boat is more complex than Lego! Each chapter addresses a phase of the construction, and there are useful lists of tools and raw materials.

My only real reservation is the photos, which are black and white, and not particularly clear. In fairness they are usually clear enough to show what they need to show, but they are not elegant or sharp. The photos are supplemented with line drawings, and they are extremely clear and helpful.

I bought the book as part of a kit, and my boat is now sailing. If you're interested in understanding through an example how boats are built, this book is fun and interesting. But if you build your own boat, the fun is multiplied.
