Book Description

June 1993

Taking the baton from International Marine's best-selling 12-Volt Bible for Boats and Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual, Boatowner's Illustrated Handbook of Wiring delves deeper into the how-to-wire, how-to-solder approach of the former and the electrical system design, troubleshooting, and improvement aspects of the latter. DC and AC wiring materials and techniques are all covered, as are batteries, alternators, inverters, generators, corrosion control, and alternate energy installations (solar, wind, and water). There are detailed instructions for wiring radios, loran, and other radio navigation devices. The dozens of weekend projects include installing cabin lights, navigation lights, burglar alarms, battery charge indicators, bilge alarms, and much more. Extensive tables summarize the most important information and specifications in a quick-reference format.

Boatowner's Illustrated Handbook of Wiring is a user-friendly, roll-up-your-sleeves manual for onboard electrical projects, from fixing loose connections to rewiring the boat. Simple, clear, and abundantly illustrated, here is the key to understanding and customizing you boat's DC and AC systems.

Editorial Reviews

Review

``The square format allows large, clearly defined and labeled wiring diagrams, an attribute that is worth its weight in gold when sprawled on a cabin sole in 90-degree heat with the floorboards up and a multimeter in hand troubleshooting some mystery short.'' (Cruising World )

``It's well worth having if your boat is more than a few years old and electrical gremlims are starting to apear.'' (Starboard Tack )

``When electrical problems and projects come up, [this book] will be your best friend.'' (The Ensign ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for the beginner or before you have serious problems, September 10, 2000

Interesting book though several things keep it from earning more stars.

Apparently the book was last updated in 1993. So, comparisons using more modern inverters, 400+ Amp alternators, newer wind machines/solar cells are not compared.

Personally, I am more interested in the ground up construction of a marine electrical system. The book deals well with the repair and maintenance of an existing one, as well as small projects. The book is more suited to an existing boat owner rather than a builder.

Lastly, explanations go from basic to advanced with little time spent in between. Though this isn't a major problem.

My recommendation?.. If you need serious help with your boats electrical system.. keep shopping.. But, if you have minor problems, wish to understand the systems better or wish to prevent problems by all means buy this book..

A very well illustrated book, Charlie Wing writes in an easy-to-follow style. Intended for the boat owner, this will help you work on minor to medium projects and converse intelligently with the boatyard for complex projects.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but somewhat elementary for my needs, January 4, 2010

This is a nice book but I was hoping for a bit more information on wiring methods and techniques. It's not bad for people who need some basic background in electricity theory.
