Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-This book is filled with fabulous full-color photographs of vessels of various shapes, sizes, and styles. Bold borders in different shades surround the photos and set them off admirably. The small amount of large-print text introduces many types of watercraft and the different tasks that they have been designed to accomplish. Some of the vocabulary, though, may be difficult for young children or ESL students to read and understand without help. Also, a picture of a jet skier without a safety vest or helmet may cause concern for some. This title covers the same material as Gail Gibbons's Boat Book (Holiday, 1983) and Donald Crews's Harbor (Greenwillow, 1982), both of which are illustrated with drawings. Still, with its eye-catching photos, Boats Afloat should find a useful place in primary-level transportation units.

From Booklist

This collection of colorful photographs strung together with a simple text focuses on boats. Most spreads feature three or four bordered photos that share a line or two of text. At times children will need help sorting out which references in the writing refer to which boats in the pictures. Generally clear and well composed, the photos will give kids many kinds of boats to look at and talk about. Not an essential purchase, but a good supplementary resource on the subject.
