5.0 out of 5 stars All aboard Barton's "Boats", November 11, 2001
This review is from: Boats Board Book (Board book)
"Boats," by Byron Barton, is a good book for beginning readers. Like others by this author, the book combines simple text with illustrations in Barton's trademark style: bright, solid colors and simplified, almost iconic figures.

Barton depicts a rowboat, sailboat, fire department boat, ferry, cruise ship, and other vessels. The boats are actually shown in action. A nice touch is that the passengers and crew are people of different colors and ethnic appearances. Sample text: "There goes a fishing boat out to sea." A colorful and educational book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright colors and big pictures, September 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Boats Board Book (Board book)
I suggest Amazon.com to reconsider their age rating for this book. Toddler to 3 years might be more approriate. This being said however, my toddler boy loves this book. He goes wild over the bright colors and big bright pictures. The great thing is that the book introduces one new boat per page while keeping the previous boat displayed in the background. This way the child is able to see what happens to the other boat while being introduced to a new one. The Text is easy and plain "here comes a rowing boat" style, leaving plenty of room to create ones own stories.
I recommend this book for small children.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter adores this book! She's worn it out!, June 7, 2007
This review is from: Boats Board Book (Board book)
My husband, who loves naval history, bought this book for our daughter when she was one year old. Since then, it has become one of her prized possessions. I've had to buy another copy, because she's spilled milk all over it and the pages have stuck solid.

The bright colors, dark print and overlapping scenarios keep her engrossed. Definitely a great book to have for your toddler.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love this book!!, September 14, 2003

This review is from: Boats (Hardcover)
I purchased this book in early June when my son, who was 16 months was just learning about boats. Having a difficult time finding age appropriate boat books for him, I decided on this one and haven't been disappointed. The pictures and drawings are very basic but we always seem to find lots of things to talk about. He loves this book and has created his own mannerisms for each page and picture. The size of the book is small like other board books and is perfect for little hands to hold and turn the pages. We have read this book some many times the binding is broken and the pages are getting worn. He refers to it as the boat book and just can't seem to get enough of it. I would highly recommend it for any child , you won't be disappointed. We are looking forward to trying some of his other books after the success we had with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction!, October 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Boats (Library Binding)
We bought this book for our 18-month old prior to taking him on a cruise. By the time we got to the port, he was familiar with tugboats, lighthouses, motorboats and the process of boarding a ship and saying "bon voyage." He carried it everywhere with him onboard, and proudly showed it to other passengers. We believe that it helped prepare him for the weeklong adventure!

4.0 out of 5 stars Boats for Boys and Girls, April 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Boats Board Book (Board book)
When my son was little, this was one of his favorite books. He never got tired of looking at the pictures of all the different boats. The bright colors and easy-to-look at illustrations were perfect for his attention span. The words are printed in bold black letters, making letter identification easy. Now that my son is a teenager, I still give this book for a baby gift-it's terrific!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Beginner Book., April 24, 2011

I bought this for my 20-month old son at the same time I bought three other Byron Barton books ("My Car", "Trains", and "Machines at Work"). This is the least often requested of the four, but my son still enjoys it. In fact, these four books are his four favorite books. The book is typical Byron Barton...bright, colorful pictures and a basic, sensible story. The only reason I think my son doesn't enjoy it as much as the other books is that he has not had any exposure to boats outside of this book. Like I said, though, he still seems to really like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, January 20, 2011

My four year old has a ton of books, he loves books and being read to but rarely have I seen him so interested in a particular book. He really loves this book, we read it to him three times last night and afterwards he thumbed through it for a half hour or so. The pictures are nice, the text is simple and the book is very captivating for a child. It seems like a good book to start teaching words and reading with.

Happy with this purchase. The book is thick card board and sturdy too.

I think I'll buy the "Trains" one next.
