What a Shame!,
By Dylanfan 111 (midwest) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bob Dylan: Tribute to Dylan - Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 16, 1992 (DVD)
I remember well the original live broadcast of this concert on the radio, and I've waited all these years for a DVD to come out. Now that it is here it is only about half of the actual concert songs, and many of these are truncated versions. Oh well, I still have my CD set with most of the concert intact. Maybe in 15 more years they will release the whole show on video.

Very disappointing video quality-muddy and no contrast. Missing many of the performances. Overall a shameful product

Who decided which songs to include?,

I don't know, maybe there are rights issues with some of the performances that keep the suits from releasing the entire concert. OK, I can deal with that. But if one Eric Clapton song can be included, there must not be a rights issue. So why did they leave off what I consider to be the finest cover of a Dylan song in the history of Dylan music. Clapton's cover of "Don't think twice, It's all right" is a masterpiece. Clapton takes a pretty good folk song and turns it into an stunning blues song. I will never buy this DVD. I will watch my VHS copy until the oxide falls off.

This Show Had The Audience Knockin' On Heaven's Door but not this version,

I have this entire concert on Laserdisc (minus for some reason "I'll Keep It With Mine" by a woman singer whose name I can't remember which was on the actual concert. I've watched it many times over the past decades and it never fails to move me. There were a lot of early '80s concert and early '90s concerts which were released on VHS before the DVD appeared and I have found most of them on LaserDiscs although ironically the cheapest place to buy them has been from Japan! This show is essential watching for anyone who loves Dylan. Imagine Dylan and Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty, Neil Young (vocal and guitar solos), George Harrison (vocal), and Eric Clapton (vocal and guitar solos) backed by Booker T. & The MGs and B. T. (with Steve Cropper) and G. T. Smith (Hall & Oates) and Anton Fig on drums doing "My Back Pages" and you know this is not a show that will disappoint. Dylan is even thrown in for good measure.

This DVD was a great disppointment because: 1. It is quite an incomplete representation of the concert - only selected performances are included and it misses perhaps most of the best; and 2. the picture quality is quite poor - fuzzy images with a strange color caste. In summary, don't bother with this one.

I have the original version of this concert on VCR and wanted to update on DVD. This is NOT the original concert I thought it was - it is bits n pieces of it, colour and sound are terrible - it`s like a bad copy of the original - a fake. I would have returned it accept it is open, and the return policy only pays back half the cost of item, plus you are responsible for shipping. I have now ordered with my local store - the REAL version, which is 2 dvd`s, and am waiting on the arrival. I purchased this for a TRUE Bob Dylan`s fan Birthday, and he was so disappointed also. This will be thrown in garbage or perhaps recycling - what a waste of $25.00!!! Next time I will read the reviews before purchasing anything,as I am not the only one who feels this way. This should be removed from Amazon website I believe. On a positive note, I have purchased many books and other dvd`s from Amazon and am very impressed with product, and service.

Very good but incomplete because it doesn't include the following: Chrissie Hyde, I Shall Be Released; Neil Young, All Along The Watchtower; Johnny Cash/June Carter Cash, It Ain't Me Babe; Lou Reed, Foot Of Pride; My Back Pages; Tom Petty, License to Kill and several others on the 30 Anniversary Concert Celebration. Just thinking about those Chrissie Hyde's and Neil Young's missing songs, it probably deserves only 2 stars.

Incomplete Version of the Great VHS Tapes,

This review is from: Bob Dylan: Tribute to Dylan - Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 16, 1992 (DVD)
Anyone like me, who owns the VHS tapes from this 1992 concert in Madison Square Garden titled Bob Dylan, The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration, Volumes I and II will likely be bitterly disappointed to learn that many of the great performances on the VHS tapes are missing from this DVD. Most tragically, the best performance by a medley of musicians and singers ever recorded is missing. The first verse of My Back Pages on Volume II of the VHS tapes is sung by Roger McGuinn, the second by Tom Petty, the third by Neil Young, the fourth by Eric Clapton, the fifth by Bob Dylan and sixth by George Harrison, and includes some incredible guitar playing by Eric and Neil. This rendition of My Back Pages is unsurpassed for the stature of the performers, its quality and the way it moved the audience. 15 performances from the VHS were cut from the DVD, including Lou Reed singing Foot of Pride; June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash singing It Ain't Me, Babe; Kris Kristofferson singing I'll Be Your Baby Tonight; Johnny Winter's version of Highway 61 Revisited; Neil Young's rendition of All Along the Watchtower; Chrissie Hynde's excellent performance of I Shall Be Released; Eric Clapton on Don't Think Twice, It's All Right; and a wonderful singing of You Ain't Goin' Nowhere by Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Rosanne Cash and Shawn Colvin. Thankfully, the DVD does include Eric Clapton's amazing performance of Love Minus Zero/No Limit, which I would offer as some of the strongest existing evidence that he is the greatest electic guitar player ever. That performance alone makes this DVD worth the purchase price, and you'll get George Harrison's Absolutely Sweet Marie, Neil Young's excellent version of Just Like Thom Thumb's Blues and the Band's great job of When I Paint My Masterpiece to relieve some of the pain for all that's missing from this DVD. There is still a huge opportunity for the makers of rock concert DVDs to recreate in DVD format all that is on the VHS tapes.

tribute to Dylan- can I exchange for the following??,
This review is from: Bob Dylan: Tribute to Dylan - Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York City, October 16, 1992 (DVD)
This is a bit of an odd request- last week I returned my Bob Dylan dvd as the quality was pathetic (among other things), and am still waiting for my refund.Btw- postage was $4.50 au. Today (1 week later), I want to buy the dvd called Schindlers List, and I can't seem to find ANY copy that will play in Australia. Can you help- maybe a swap can be arranged- if that is not too late. I would prefer new condition; don't mind waiting. Awaiting your reply S Cameron.

I am very, very disapointed with this DVD. After waiting all these years all we get is, maybe, half the concert. Very sad. In addition the material was poorly remastered. It is a pity. We deserved more, in many ways.
