Book Description

April 10, 2003
Offering readers more than just a sneak peek into the dugout, Bob Forsch's Tales from the Cardinals Dugout takes fans into the clubhouse, out to the bullpen, onto the mound, up to the batter's box, around the base paths, along for the ride to spring training, and maybe even on a fishing trip or two in this tribute to the long and storied tradition of St. Louis Cardinals baseball.

In his own witty style, Bob Forsch, known to many as "Forschie" during his playing days, has drawn from his exciting history with the Cardinals to bring fans stories that are laugh-out-loud funny, like his rookie gaffes and lifelong antics with his older brother Ken, a fellow big leaguer and no-hit artist. Other tales are poignant, like his tributes to St. Louis favorite Willie McGee, legendary broadcaster Jack Buck, and "The Cardinal Way" Some of the stories reveal inside tricks, like how to confuse sign stealers. Still more are rarely-told true confessions, like throwing at 2003 National Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Gary Carter, following Jim Kaat's tips for doctoring a baseball, or playing silly clubhouse pranks on the superstitious Joaquin Andujar.

Forsch also includes the story of the pre-victory party that helped the Cardinals win the 1982 World Series - not even manager Whitey Herzog knew about that one. These stories and many more come to life in Bob Forsch's Tales from the Cardinals Dugout. No Cardinal fan's bookrack should be without it.

About the Author

Bob Forsch wore the "Birds on Bat" logo for 15 years as a member of the Cardinals. Only Stan Musial, Jessie Haines, Bob Gibson and Lou Brock, all Hall of Famers, were with the team for a longer period of time. The only Cardinals pitcher to throw two no-hitters and pitch in three World

Series, Forsch still ranks in the club's top ten in six pitching categories: third in wins (163), strikeouts (1,079), and innings pitched (2,658); fourth in games (455); ninth in shutouts (19); and - oops! - fourth in walks (780). He also won two Silver Bats as the top-hitting pitcher in the National League, and his 12 career home runs trail only Bob Gibson's total among Cardinal pitchers. A former all-city basketball player at Hiram W. Johnson High School in Sacramento, California, Forsch enjoys bass fishing and rooting for St. Louis teams. He has two daughters, Amy and Kristin, and resides in Chesterfield, Missouri.

Tom Wheatley has covered sports since 1984 for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. A four-time Missouri Sportswriter of the Year (awarded by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association), he also coauthored 70! Mark McGwire, Fathers and Sons, and a motivational book for girls, Get With It, Girls! Life Is Competition. Wheatley and his wife Suzanne, who met while both were Marine Corps lieutenants, have three children: Tommy, Katie, and Carrie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Forsch Paints the Corners, June 24, 2003
By

This review is from: Bob Forsch's Tales from the Cardinal Dugout (Hardcover)
A nice collection of stories from Bob Forsch's years with the Cardinals. Written as short anecdotes, these recollections are good for stop and start reading. Forsch remembers his years with the Redbirds [1974-1988] and talks a bit about some current players and the state of the game today. It'll stir the memories of older Cards fans, and give younger ones a look at baseball the way it used to be. Good natured, clean, with funny moments and inside looks at being a major league player, Forsch entertains baseball fans of all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bathroom reading, May 1, 2006

Reds Fan (Cincinnati, OH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bob Forsch's Tales from the Cardinal Dugout (Hardcover)
I'm primarily a Reds fan but enjoy reading about anything baseball-related, especially if you get to know players are on a much deeper basis. In fact, it's often the non-superstars that I found most interesting.

This book fit this description personally. Forsch, like other subjects in the "Tales from the Dugout" series, was a local favorite but not really known on a national scale. However, his stories include all of the big names in Cardinals history, so you get to read new stories as well as the famous ones (however, you get to hear them from a new perspective).

A storied called GQ Joe (Joe Magrane) alone was worth the price of the book.
