I am a seventy year old native North Carolinian who has eaten barbecue all over the United States, but grew up eating "Eastern N.C. Barbecue" in Wilson, Rocky Mount and Goldsboro. During the forty years that my wife and I lived away from our native place, we often yearned for "Parker's Barbecue", and tried mightily to make it ourselves. We never came close, and were reminded of that every time we came home for a visit and a Parker's barbecue dinner. Had we had this book our problems would have been largely solved. Bob Garner's recipes are authentic (our attempts at using them were not quite what one gets from the pros, but we were damn close). Also, Mr. Garner's history of barbecue in N.C. is thorough and fascinating, especially for someone who enjoys cooked pig. I recommend this book with no reservations. If I wasn't such an old codger I would give this book 5 stars, but my generation doesn't give out high grades so lightly. Nonetheless, if you are interested in this subject at all, or know someone who is, buy the book. You will not be disappointed.

I used this to eat my way across North Carolina. Six days ten barbecue joints and I just scratched the surface. Some weren't as good as expected but all were up there. If you are cooking Q on a wood based fire (what else is there?) it is hard to produce a 100% consistent product day after day. They all came close. YUM I'm going back for seconds.

Gift for my son for Christmas. I am from NC and love barbecue. My son cooks his own barbecue just like NC. He has really loved reading about all of the different barbecue restaurants in NC and their history. We want to definately try some of the locations. He remembers going to some of them when he was very young with his grandfather.

I got to meet Bob Garner before this book came out. It is a great read, lots of reviews of BBQ places in NC. I could eat BBQ for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. :) :) It is my favorite food, glad to have this book to try other places out. :) :)

Printing quality of this book is very poor. The pages are like old newsprint, it's all black and white, and overall quality of the printing was poor. It is difficult to read many of the pages because the background is dark and there is not enough contrast between the background and the printing and photos on the page. Bob Garner definitely knows North Carolina barbecue, but I could have lived without reading about his encounters with celebrities (Bobby Flay, Paula Dean), his interview on Good Morning America, and his efforts to lose weight.
