Biography

VeggieTales is an American series of English language children's computer animated films featuring anthropomorphic vegetables. Developed by Big Idea, the films convey moral themes based on Christianity, often compatible with Judaism, spliced with satirical references to pop culture and current events. VeggieTales was created by Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki, who also provide many of the voices.… Read more in Amazon's VeggieTales Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Had a couple of salad vegetables performed Sunday-school songs in our day the way they do here, we parents might have made it through the weekly churchgoing ritual without the regular reaming by our own moms and dads. Delivering the between-song dialogue and cartoon shenanigans that keep kids from drifting off are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, who whoop it up from the first track with wah-wah guitar effects, loopy lyrical improv, fellow VeggieTales guest vocalists, and a smattering of big-band swing. A kids' choir provides the starch that saves Sunday morning from becoming a beta-carotene bomb. While Bob twists his tongue around mouthfuls like "the mighty messiah that manifests miracles" in "Down in My Heart," for instance, the kids keep pace for at-home singers, who'll follow suit. Similarly, the child crooners carry on without so much as a snicker as Sgt. Larry barks out "Gimme 20!" in "This is My Commandment" and chimes in with a wacky "No way!" during the "Don't let Satan blow it out" verse of "This Little Light of Mine." The originals "God's Way," "Love Your Neighbor," and "I Believe God Can" capture hummable, child-size chunks of morality, complementing traditionals like "He's Got the Whole World" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children." And once Joshua fights the battle of Jericho and we've washed up in a river of peace, this record swings into section two--the split-track rerun (without the veggie character commentary). Cue it up at the crack of dawn as a pre-service snooze-prevention device--ironically, in Bob and Larry's vitamin-rich hands, church songs become less boring broccoli and more crunchy Cheetos. --Tammy La Gorce

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Can't Stop Singing These Songs, July 18, 2002
By
This review is from: Bob & Larry's Sunday Morning Songs (Audio CD)
My 2-year-old has helped me to discover the wonderful world of VeggieTales, and this CD is just another reason why we love them so much! Many of these songs will be familiar to those who grew up going to church - "This Little Light of Mine", "Give Me Oil in My Lamp", etc. Only a few of the songs are VeggieTales originals such as "Love Your Neighbor" and "God's Way". But a lot of the songs have been updated in VeggieTale's style to appeal to kids today. My son and my 3-year-old nephew (and I admit, sometimes even me) just can't help singing along!

Add some goofy dialogue from Bob and Larry, as well as guest appearances from Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape (whose rendition of "Zaccheaus" is hilarious!) and you have a very entertaining drive-time CD. The CD also includes every song (sans most dialogue) in split-track format at the end so you can play just the background music (if you have a CD player or sound system that has balance control). I can't wait to perform some of these songs with my children's choir!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining, December 2, 2002

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old -- he loves Bob the tomato. I found that I really liked the songs too because they are fun versions of all those sunday school songs that most people know. I sing along and as my son learns the words he will probably sing along too. He asks for "Bob's songs" frequently and so will most kids especially if they already like veggie tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and Fun, November 9, 2003

This review is from: Bob & Larry's Sunday Morning Songs (Audio CD)
My daughter, now 19 months, has absolutely loved this CD for the last year. She never grows tired of it, and as a musician myself I have to say I really enjoy the talented and fun veggie versions of these old classics that add some pizzazz without ruining the integrity of songs themselves. If you're looking for stated, old fashioned children's hymns, this isn't for you, but if you have a sense of rhythm and humor and would like to teach your child that church and God and morels are actually good things, not boring things, then I highly recommend this swinging CD. And an added delight: this morning out of the blue my daughter joined in with the "Down in My Heart" song, right on time, singing "joee joee joee" and then squeaking for the "where?" part. I love that she loves these songs, and from them has learned the word "joy."
