5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a fantastic look at the reggae scene in JA during its prime. All the major figures are here...Jacob "Killer" Miller (one of my personal favorites), Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, U-Roy, and of course Bob Marley. I can understand some people being disappointed with the movie because it doesn't have as much Marley as the cover would have you believe. Also the...

3.0 out of 5 stars For fans only-not for novices
This DVD is for hardcore reggae fans only. This is supposed to be a filmed record of the One Love Peace Concert held in Jamaica in April 1978 to end the political violence that was then ruining the country, and the role of reggae in it. Pretty low-budget stuff, with subpar picture and sound quality. Lots of ganja-induced babbling from the rastas who are interviewed...

Also the quality of the video is sub-par during some portions. I was thrilled that the video focused on more than just Bob Marley. Too often, filmmakers approach reggae as if Bob was the only major artist and Heartland Reggae does a good job portraying the other luminaries in this dynamic music scene. As far as the sound quality goes, it isn't the best during some portions but when you take into consideration the age of the film it doesn't take away from the quality of the music or the power of the movie.

Great reggae education program containing scenes from the One Love Peace concert that occured in mid 70's down in Jamaica featured everyone from Jacob Miller and his Inner Circle to The Might Almighty Bob Marley! This DVD feature the historic footage of Mr. Music bringing together two opposing leaders of Jamaica for the first time, ever! Wow! You get to watch Bob freaking out to what ever he consumed before the show very clearly with the DVD traetments! My wish list is to get a reggae historian to tell us all about the artist involved in this woodstock of Jamaica festival through audio commentery! Peter Toshe gives an awsome performance here and we can jump right to it!!! Haile' Sallise'! Ja! Rastafarai! ... remeber it was made in the 1970's ! Be thankful they released this at all!!!:) The Country Man, Bob Marley live from california, bob Marley live from Germany are on my wish list next for anyone reading this!!! Mahalo plenty! S:)

Lots of ganja-induced babbling from the rastas who are interviewed between songs.

But for the reggae fan, it's fascinating. Rare performance footage of Jacob Miller and Inner Circle (after Miller's death, the lattter would become famous for "Bad Boys," the them from COPS). Miller is quite wild as he mocks the police by putting on a policeman's hat and smoking ganga in their presence. Peter Tosh does the uncensored version of "Get Up Stand Up" and "African" (unfortuantely, his famous tirade against the Jamaican politicans at the concert is not included, though it is available elsewhere). Also, Big Youth, one of the most charasmatic reggae stars of the era, appeared at this concert, but footage of him is not included.

Bob Marley (referred to here as "The prophet") does soem interesting versions of "Trenchtown Rock" and "Natty Dread," but the scene where lightning punctuates his every sentance where he gets the rival politicla leaders to shake hands is truly electrifying (no pun intended) and makes the film worthwhile.

But if you're not into reggae, the overall murkiness of the film does not make this a good place to start, tho fans will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece, April 18, 1999
By A Customer
I've seen this movie about 20 times now. This is really as much a political movie as a music video, but its hard to draw the line...reggae roots are in political action. This movie provides an excellent historical background to reggae's place in Jamaican society.

Don't be deceived by the way it's promoted - Bob is only in it for about 4 or 5 songs. However, the Bob footage is exceptional and there are *great* performances by other reggae superstars you may or may not have heard of. Excellent U-Roy and Peter Tosh performances, and Jacob Miller is killer. If you are a reggae fan, you don't want to miss this one!

This dvd is great! I would recommend this dvd to all bob marley fans. But not just bob marley. With performances by Peter Tosh, Dennis Brown, Jacob Miller, Marcia Griffiths, And others. This dvd also includes the 1978 "One Love Peace Concert",featuring Bob Marley. With songs like, "Natty Dread", "War","Jah live", and "Jammin'". This dvd is simply great. Even though the sound quality and picture isn,t that great but brings my rating down to four stars. This is still a great dvd though.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Bob Marley & The Wailers - Heartland Reggae (DVD)
As read below the original name for this video was "Heartland Reggae", the publisher shamelessly put Bob Marleys name in (even though he only sings 2 songs) to make money. In fact they didnt need to do this because the real star of thi show is jacob Milla, he absolutely stole the show with his performances. This is the only show Ive seen on DVD that accurately shows the jamaican reggae scene in its entirety. Even though Bob was the greatest, he was by no means the only top class reggae singer out there as this film attests. I watched this a couple years ago on vhs and when i saw it out on dvd i had to get it, the sound and picture is dated and i dont think there was any remastering at all. The vhs was in mono, im glad they upgraded that to stereo, I just feel fortunate to own this so I can witness what the reggae scene was like back in the day. They film from the biggest concerts in the capital to the out of the way ones in the countryside, i truly enjoyed this and if you into reggae I cannot recommend this strongly enough

Love this dvd. Lots of live footage of reggae in the 70s in JA. The sound and picture quality is OK, could be better but this is [an inexpensive] DVD and way worth the price.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waist of Money, July 24, 2002
This review is from: Bob Marley & The Wailers - Heartland Reggae (DVD)
First of all, this DVD is very very misleading with a picture of Bob Marley on the cover. I waatched the first 35 mins of it and it was horribe, it looks like some stoned rasta got a couple of home videos and put them together, there was not even any editing done, it just goes from one video to another. There are actually black-outs in the film.

This is by far the worst DVD I have seen. There is no commentary or anything. The only consolation is that I did not pay a lot for it.

This DVD is very very misleading for BOB fans, because it gives the impression that he the main star of the movie. Thank GOD for people like Jeremy, and other producers who take their time and produce quality documentaries for reggae lovers.

This DVD is a hoax

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding documentary, March 15, 2003
This review is from: Bob Marley & The Wailers - Heartland Reggae (DVD)
OK It's a little cheesy that the dvd has been retitled 'Bob Marley' rather than the original flick's name, just plain old 'Heartland Reggae'. Nonetheless, it's a more valuable document than merely any old live Marley footage could possibly be. It is a mind-boggling picture of one country coming together under apparently a national music. Can you imagine GW Bush and Al Gore getting motivated by I don't know Linkin Park to come on stage at a huge concert and shake hands? The equivalent happens at the end of this movie. Further, placing Marley in the context of fellow stars who never quite made it off the island like Jacob Miller and U-Roy just gives you that much more insight into what the heck he was doing and where he came from.

OK, the sound does not surround and the footage is occasionally blurry, but the document is invaluable. What blues fans wouldn't give for a comparable view of Chicago in the 50s, never mind Mississippi in the 30s.
