Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
The folks of Lake Charles, La., are still recovering from Bobbie Faye Sumrall's first explosive adventure, Bobbie Faye's (Very, Very, Very) Bad Day (2007), when Francesca Despré, Bobbie Faye's cousin, demands her assistance in recovering valuable diamonds Francesca's eccentric artist mother, Marie, hid before vanishing in this rollicking sequel. Supposedly, Emile, Marie's estranged husband, has put a hit out on Marie in the event the diamonds aren't recovered. The Department of Homeland Security is also interested—ditto assorted international criminals. Reluctant to get involved, Bobbie Faye winds up getting abducted by some thugs and is later rescued by the dashing Trevor Cormier, an undercover FBI agent. Meanwhile, Det. Cameron Moreau, Bobbie Faye's old boyfriend, investigates the shooting of a local jeweler that could land Bobby Faye in jail. Though the pace is almost too fast and frantic, Causey's masterful depiction of Cajun country and Bobbie Faye's irrepressible spirit redeem this colorful caper. (June)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Cajun beauty Bobbie Faye Sumrall is back, and this time she is being chased by the FBI, criminal elements in her own family, the Irish Mob, and Homeland Security, all of whom are convinced that she knows the location of a priceless cache of diamonds. With a little help from her friends, most notably sexy FBI agent Trevor and her ex-lover, hunky detective Cam, Bobbie Faye manages to stay just ahead of the Grim Reaper as she leaves a trail of destruction in her wake while racing through once peaceful Lake Charles, Louisiana. Other denizens play a role in Bobbie Faye’s adventure—CeCe, the voodoo queen who owns the shop where Bobbie Faye works the gun counter; Francesca, her drama queen cousin; Aubrey, the high-school senior who sells “Bobbie Faye debris” on eBay; and local news reporter Reggie “Buzz Saw” O’Connor, who lives by the creed that if there’s no news, make some up. Causey roared into the book world with Bobbie Faye’s Very (very, very, very) Bad Day (2007) and now takes readers on another thrilling roller-coaster ride in this fast, feisty, and ferociously funny novel. --Shelley Mosley

4.0 out of 5 stars Bobbie Faye Returns, May 27, 2008
By book lover (Eden Prairie, MN, United States) - See all my reviews
This follows up Bobbie Faye's Very, 'very, very, very' Bad Day. It starts up a couple months after the first disaster and many of the same characters appear. Bobby Faye is working at Ce Ce's store one day when her cousin Francesca shows up asking Bobbie Faye to help her find stolen diamonds her mother, Marie, hid somewhere. Francesca's father, Emile, head of a mob organization and the person Marie stole the diamonds from, thinks Bobbie Faye knows where they are at. Within the first several chapters of the book, Bobbie Faye is shot at, kidnapped on the same block by three separate groups of people, and her car blows up on a bridge, taking part of the bridge with it. So you could say the sequel starts off with a bang.

Throughout the book, we get to meet more of Bobbie Faye's crazy family, including her father, she blows up other things, comes near death several times, all while trying to figure out her feelings for Trevor 'well those feelings are pretty obvious' and Cam 'not so obvious'. Bobbie Faye is also accused of murder not once, but twice through the course of the book. Trevor and Cam know she is innocent and try to figure out a way to keep every cop in the state from killing her on sight.

Causey's second attempt with Bobbie Faye does not disappoint. However, I don't think it quite lives up to the first one. A little less time is spent on the action and running around 'just a little, there's still a lot of action' and more time is spent developing the relationship she has with Trevor and Cam. There are also a ton of characters in this book, sometimes a little difficult to keep track of. And I didn't laugh out loud quite as much as the first one. With all that being said, I was still highly entertained and liked the ending. I won't give too much away, but we find out a little more about best friend Nina at the end of book. Hmm.....perhaps we're setting up for a third installment?

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick Bobbie Faye...Run Away from Cliché, July 18, 2008
By Terry Lyle "Yodeler" (Jamestown, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you enjoyed Causey's "Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day", you will like "Bobbie Faye's (kinda, sorta, not exactly) Family Jewels". If you LOVED (as I did) the first book you will like the new installment as well, yet you may find yourself wishing it had the verve of the original. Causey's first book grabs you by the b...ull horns and literally drags you (willingly) from one hysterical, climatic event to another.

"...Family Jewels" is a good read yet I couldn't keep the niggling in my mind from pointing out that this was turning into something I've read before. My peeve? Well, it's the "torn between two lovers" thing. I read a lot and one of my favorite genre's is mystery stories with women protagonists. Virtually every one falls into the "oh, which man do I love?...the straight and narrow cop (usually furious)or the rebellious kinda...sorta...good-bad guy". It's the path I see Cuasey taking in this new book and, for my money, it takes up too much reading time when Bobbie could be blowing something up. I guess I long for a woman who can make up her mind about who she wants and then gets on with business. I know that a writer needs to create some sort of conflict in order to keep things interesting but, isn't there something new?

Okay, I'm over it and do recommend this book as an entertaining, fast read. Causey excells at sarcasm, humor, character devlopment and painting scenes of intense drama and suspense (blowing things up). (If you didn't read Causey's first book...GET IT...it is terrific.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another bull's eye!!, July 1, 2008
The fates are out gunning for Bobbie Faye in this hilarious sequel. If it weren't for bad luck she'd have no luck at all - well except for the men in her life. Who wouldn't want a couple of hunky heroes battling for their attention? Amidst explosions and life on the run, Bobbie Faye will make you laugh out loud at her antics and root for her all the way to the end. A sassy, kick-but Southern gal who takes life by the horns.
