Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Patron's ( Five Bad Boys, Billy Que, and the Dustdobbin ) unusual cast of characters returns for another adventure in this quirky picture book. This time PapaHob, the creature who lives in the dust under Billy Que's bed, introduces Bobbin, his talented but shy daughter. Bobbin's fear of the broom on Billy Que's porch keeps her from wandering too far from the safe haven of the bedroom. But it's Billy Que's birthday and the five bad boys from the neighborhood show up looking for cake and ice cream. In return for their treats, the bad boys offer to do Billy Que's chores--including sweeping, forcing Bobbin to take drastic measures. Patron's ambitious text has plenty of verve, but her story loses momentum due to several digressions. However, she skillfully incorporates such traditional folktale elements as enchanted, elusive figures and such devices as repetition, which help sustain readers' attention through any rough spots. Shenon's ink and watercolor paintings exude a jovial warmth through earthy and appropriately dusty hues. His smiling Dustdobbins may prompt readers to wonder if there really is life in the hidden corners of an unkempt room. Ages 4-7.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-PapaHob is mighty proud of his daughter, Bobbin Dustdobbin, who has the form of a dust kitten and the personality of a sprite. She takes care of "...things close to the floor, so she knew about every leak, creak, drip, draft, crack,...in Billy Que's house." But Bobbin is not daring. She hates the broom, and doesn't trust the master of the house, because he owns it (not that he ever uses it). When Billy Que's birthday catalyzes the possible cleaning of his house, Bobbin takes courage and takes action. This lively, folksy picture book features ink-line and watercolor cartoons (primarily in dusty hues) loaded with character, and pages that use white space to advantage. The fantastic Dustdobbin family is contrasted with the five bad boys (a nicely multicultural crew) who come to celebrate with their friend. Patron's language has the rhythm and overstatement of a tall tale, and the effect is exuberant. As with many folktales, there's a message here too: young people, in taking responsibility for themselves, are ready to grow. A treat for story time or independent readers.
