Playin' with Monk's wagon,
This review is from: Bobby Broom Plays For Monk (Audio CD)
The nod to one of my favorite album covers of all time puts me in a right mood to enjoy this CD. Remember Monk's Music on Riverside with Trane and Coleman Hawkins? How could you forget. If you've heard Peter Bernstein's Monk trio recording, you may want to make comparisons with Bobby's. They play the same instrument and half the tunes on their respective trio outings are the same. Bobby's phrasing and articulation are a joy to experience. His attack has the right amount of stank on it to make me think Monk would have dug it too if he could have heard it. We know Sonny Rollins digs it. I am constantly amazed at how comfortable he sounds, no matter what the material might be. This CD works from top to bottom. I would have preferred the bass to be just a little more in front, but the overall sound is cool. Bobby can play. And, oh yes, Bobby can improvise. Please check him out on this one. Bobby with the Deep Blue Organ Trio and his own Modern Man on Delmark are also well worth a listen.
