Editorial Reviews

Product Description
UK 2008 reissue of this self-titled album from the Louisiana-based singer/songwriter, originally released in 1972. Best known for his songwriting in the '50s and '60s ('See You Later, Alligator', 'Walking To New Orleans'), Charles recorded a plethora of solo recordings but never achieved commercial success on his own although this album has remained a critical favorite. Features guest appearances from The Band's Rick Danko, Dr. John, David Sanborn, Amos Garrett and others (including Danko's Band-mates). 11 tracks. Rhino UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great, GREAT album!, July 3, 2001
By Katherine R. (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bobby Charles (Audio CD)
I can't believe I found this CD again. I used to play the album on the radio when it first came out, and it's remained in my memory one of the best albums ever. Bobby Charles is a very well-known Louisiana singer & songwriter in a swamp-pop style. he wrote "See you Later Alligator" and lots of hits for folks like Fats Domino. As I recall this album has members of The Band on it. I believe there was some sort of dispute with the original label that prevented it from being widely promoted, and it was out of print for a long tmie. But it's a very good album if you like the Band/Louisiana style sound. "Tennessee Blues" is a killer. Now I'm going to stop talking and go order this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bobby Charles and Woodstock, August 8, 2007
This review is from: Bobby Charles (Audio CD)
I knew Bobby Charles when we both lived in Woodstock, NY. He wrote a lot of these songs about the town and people in it. I have since lost all my record albums and have been searching for a CD of this record. It was recorded at the Bearsville Studio in Bearsville, NY, and the owner (Albert Grossman) was the brunt of He's Got All the Money. I need to get this CD if anyone has it at a reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bobby Charles an unheralded great, February 12, 2009
By Charlie ""guitarist"" (Richmond, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This album, "Bobby Charles," is great. He is one of the best of the unknown or only slightly known singer/songwriters. His real name is Robert Charles Guidry. He wrote "Walking to New Orleans," a big hit for Fats Domino. He also wrote "See You Later Alligator" "I Don't Know Why But I Do" and many others. His songs have been covered by Joe Cocker, Muddy Waters, Kris Kristofferson, Ray Charles, to name a few. His admirers include Neil Young, Dr. John, Willie Nelson. This CD has no real liner notes or accredited musicians, but the band consists of Dr. John, Amos Garret, David Sanborn, every member of The Band with the exception of Robbie Robertson, and some other well known muscians. Bobby Charles also appears on one number from The Bands "Last Waltz" CD. If you like any of the above mentioned artists, you will love this CD. I personally keep it in steady rotation.
