Book Description

September 30, 2002
Meet Bobby Gold; by night, the security chief of a mobbed-up New York City nightclub, by day, a reluctant bone-breaker and enforcer for Eddie Fish - his old college roommate, and best friend. Emerging from the 'gladiator school' environment of an upstate prison with an imposing physique and a reputation for skilled brutality, Bobby's a lonely, guilt-ridden child inside a hulking body. He views the grim work of coercion, assault and even murder as jobs to be done with a craftsman's work ethic and with a minimum of force. Following on from his two superb novels, Bone in the Throat and Gone Bamboo, Anthony Bourdain has produced another stunning piece of crime fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious fiction from an amazing chef., February 11, 2008
This review is from: Bobby Gold (Paperback)
Bobby Gold (also know as The Bobby Gold Stories) is a wonderful, hysterically funny novel about the title character, an unlikely mobster who wants to make a big change in his life. Unlike some people, I was not expecting this to be like Bourdain's other work because this book is clearly a work of fiction. His most famous works- Kitchen Confidential, A Cook's Tour, The Nasty Bits- are non-fiction books about Bourdain's life as a chef and a traveler with a wicked sense of humor. The humor is retained in Bobby Gold & Bourdain proves that he can create realistic characters and make the reader care about them.

The only thing that disappointed me a little was the length. It's more like a novella than a full-fledged novel- my copy runs only 176 pages. On the other hand, this is sort of a nice change from some of the thrillers I've read lately. I swear that some of those authors must be getting paid by the pound- my arms ache after hours of reading them. Bobby Gold can be read in one night. It's light and fun and I highly recommend it, especially to fans of Anthony Bourdain's other work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dish-a-pointment, July 25, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bobby Gold (Paperback)
I thought kitchen Confidential was a groundbreaking book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and was looking forward to more of the same with Bobby Gold.
Let's get straight to the point. It's alwful, the only good thing about it is that it takes half an hour to read. It's repetive, predictive and if I ever hear the phrase "apropo nothing" again (it's in the book at least 4 times), I will fillet Mr. Bourdain with his own knife.
I knew it was going to be bad when there are glowing reviews for other books on this book's cover.
Let's hope for some more non-fiction like Kitchen Confidential.

I enjoyed this book as I did "Gone Bamboo" and "Bone in the Throat". So what if it was shorter?
