I've always been a staunch Bobby Jaspar fan of both his flute work and on tenor sax. He is featured on both instruments on this album that was recorded for Riverside in two sessions at Reeves Sound Studios in NYC on May 23 and 28, 1957.

Listen to the sound samples for a taste of that is on this album. For me the main value is my discovering George Wallington on piano. I knew very little about him before this album I am ashamed to admit because he was one of the bebop pioneers who has managed to get lost in history for some reason. He was held in sufficient regard to have been hired by Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan and others and his playing on this album shows why. The sound samples should convince you too.

The basic ensemble is Jaspar on flute and tenor sax, backed by Wallington on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Idrees Sulieman is on trumpet during the first session on May 23 which produced tracks 1, 4 and 5. The remaining tracks feature the core ensemble.

One final note about Wallington - I was so taken by his piano that I dug a little deeper. He was born Giacinto Figlia in Palermo, Sicily and was classically trained by his father. That shows in his incredible chops and inventiveness heard on these tracks.

Overall, this is a must-have if you are a Bobby Jaspar fan, and a good starting point for Wallington if, like me, you are only now discovering him.
