5.0 out of 5 stars A Trendsetter, May 30, 2005
By

This review is from: Bobby (DVD)
Bobby is still a very watchable and enjoyable movie - hit hummable songs, even after 25 + years since it's release. It's a classic that started a trend and a mania that was usually seen in such Bollywood classics like Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India, Aradhana, Zanjeer, Sholay, etc., and still continues to be a trendsetter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Infectious, wonderful film, despite its over the topness...., October 1, 2008
This review is from: Bobby (Rishi Kapoor) (DVD)
This is one of the most famous Bollywood films ever made, and one of the most financially successful films ever made in India. It was directed by the great Raj Kapoor, and starring his son, Rishi Kapoor, who acquits himself quite well as Raj, the boy in love with Bobby, the title character. It's a Bollywood take on the Romeo and Juliet story, except the families are rich and poor. It's one of the most hokiest, silly, and melodramatic (even for Bollywood) films I've ever seen, yet the music is so infectious and the dance numbers (especially a 7 1/2 minute one that occurs halfway through the film where Rishi meets Bobby's family) are so sincere and boisterous that you find yourself taken away by the brevity and invention of them. The opening song, Taishai To Neyin (I'm No Poet), is really quite beautiful in its lyrics and wonderful in its presentation.

The film came at a shaky time for the Kapoor family. Raj Kapoor was in desperate need of a hit at the time. He had just finished his magnum opus, Mera Naam Joker (My Name is Joker), and poured a lot of his own money into it. While Joker is a great, great film, it was a box office bomb, and Raj desperately needed a hit. He got one with Bobby. Raj Kapoor went on to make only two more feature films after Bobby, but this one is the best of his final period. It's unintentionally hilarious at times (especially when Bobby and Rishi get "kidnapped" by an evil bike gang that seemed to have stepped out of a bad 1969 American motorcycle flick), but if you can suspend disbelief a bit, you'll be OK, methinks.
