About the Brand

Bob Moore's secret to life may just be "work hard and keep it simple." Living this philosophy, Bob literally puts his nose to the grindstone every day. Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods is an Oregon-based company that utilizes simple, old-world technology to mill hundreds of all-natural whole grain products.

Bob's Red Mill is dedicated to the manufacturing of natural foods in the natural way. In their own words: "With all the sophisticated knowledge of recent times, no machinery has yet been developed that grinds grains into flour quite as well as our flint-hard quartz millstones quarried in France and used by discriminating millers since early Roman times."

"Our well-dressed (sharpened) sets of millstones turn the highest quality wheat into a finer, better baking bread flour than all the hammer mills, steel roller mills, steel buhr mills, or pulverizers ever built! These slow turning millstones grind the bran, endosperm, and germ (containing its nutritious wheat germ oil) into flour in a cool natural way, creating a more assimilable food."

Bob's Red Mill stone grinds all common and most uncommon grains into flours and meals on its over 100-year-old mills. They mix them into an astounding array of unique cereals, pancake and waffle mixes, machine and hand-made bread mixes, quick bread mixes, gluten-free mixes, and specialty grain products.

Product Description

USDA organic. Friend of the heart. Bob's Red Mill Organic Brown Rice Flour is carefully ground on cool and slow turning, century-old stone-buhr millstones. We use only the highest quality whole grain brown rice to produce a delicious flour with a mild, nutty flavor. Our wholesome Organic Brown Rice Flower is a favorite ingredient for gluten-free baking. It's also great as breading or for thickening soups, sauces and gravies. Certified 100% organic by QAI. Gluten free. Bob's Re mill products labeled Gluten Free are batch tested in our quality control laboratory. We use an Elisa gluten assay test to determine if the product is gluten free. All natural.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bob, could you PLEASE use a FINER grind????? June 6, 2010
I have been baking gluten-free on a daily basis for approximately 3 years. Believe me when I say that I have tried just about every brand of Brown Rice Flour there is. Here is the skinny:
If you want a very tender, melt in your mouth baked good that is reminiscent of your wheat flour days, use Authentic Foods Brown Rice Flour. Their BRF is so fine that it is almost silky. If you bake as much as I do, and want to use Authentic Foods BRF for everything, you should look into getting a second job. That stuff is PRICEY.
If you don't want to get a second job, Bob's Red Mill BRF is the way to go, but your baked good will suffer a bit due to the sandy, gritty texture of this flour. Through trial and error, you will find that it works fine for some recipes, but others may seen a bit more gritty and crumbly. Processing this BRF in the Cuisinart or blender doesn't seem to help. So, I plan to beg Bob to choose a finer grind for the BRF his company produces. PLEASE. Pretty please? I would love you forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious! August 31, 2008

We like the brown rice flour as we feel we get a little nutrition with it. Rice flour browns and crisps nicely. It makes a fabulous fried chicken and pancakes are crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Being gluten-free is not such a bad thing. Some things even taste better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Gluten Free Cooking and Baking October 5, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase
I've been ordering this rice and also the Bob's Red Mill Organic White Rice Flour through Amazon's subscription for several months now. I couldn't be more pleased. Bob's Rice flours are finely milled so there isn't that gritty taste in your foods. I order at least 2 cases of each a month and I've never had a problem with any of my flours and all those I've received have been labeled "organic". Would love to see Amazon offer Bob's Sweet Rice Flour and their White Bean Flour, too.

I substitute this flour in regular cooking recipes for cookies, muffins, etc. when it calls for wheat flour, and they come out great! This makes a gluten free version when I am craving a desert. I love Bob's Red Mill products.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love this flour.. wish it could be finely grinded. April 2, 2009
I love this brand of flour.. and the price that I am getting it for on Amazon is amazing. I love the automatic shipment option. I wish that they would finely grind the flour a bit more as it can be grainy in some bakery items. Great product!!

This is priced a few dollars less than at store, and the 24-oz packaging makes it easy to keep your flour from going stale too quickly. The automatic reordering option is great, too, so you can get an additional discount and plan on your next shipment.

If you are making recipes using Annalize Roberts', "Gluten Free Baking," she mentions this brand is too coarse for most of the cake recipes (but OK for pizza dough.) I bought some white rice flour from the Asian store and you can definitely feel the difference. The finer ground flour felt like regular flour, and Bob's Red Mill had a slight grittiness to it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but too gritty for me January 6, 2012
By Sharon
It is a litle too gritty for me. I think this product can work well if you mix with glutinous rice flour and corn starch. If you want to use all brown rice flour, then super fine brown rice flour works so much better. The only problem is it is way too expensive. I ended up borrowing my mothers grain mill, to make my own brown rice flour. The only problem is I have to run it through 4 times to get the grittiness out of it.
