4.0 out of 5 stars Good source of minerals (and not bad-tasting either) October 15, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I put these in my cart and thought on 'em for quite a long while. $17 seemed like a lot of money to spend on something I'd never tried before. Sure, I've had some of the hulled (or white) sesame seeds on buns and such, but I was less certain of this "heartier" unhulled variety. I mean, what was I going to DO with all those seeds? Well, my concerns were quickly put aside when my quartet of bagged seeds arrived. Describing the taste is tricky; the bag says they "have a nutty, slightly sweet flavor and aroma that is enhanced by toasting." Me thinks Bob's Red Mill didn't know how to describe them either! I detect nothing sweet and notice an almost slightly smoky flavor. And I can say this: they've grown on me. I eat them straight, in cereal with milk, in homemade granola and added to baked goods. They're really quite versatile. I haven't made Tahini yet, but there's a recipe right on the package and one for Hummus and a third for cookies. Unhulled, i.e., brown sesame seeds have a higher Calcium content (16% RDA in 2 tbsp) than hulled, which is the primary reason I wanted these, but they also are a good source of Iron (13%) and Magnesium. They keep best refrigerated or frozen - and happily since I'm dealing with 4 pounds of product, the expiration date is two years off. I'm glad I bought these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brown vs. White... December 26, 2011
By NYFB
This is not organic but it is brown seed. The nutritional labeling on Bob's Red Mill Brown seed is the same as White seed. That is not true since there is a difference between hulled and unhulled. I always purchase brown organic but if not available then I get it from Bob since although not organic, I trust Bob for not selling me GMO brown seed. Bob needs to redo their labelling since it is a misinformation claiming brown and white to have the same nutritional.

The mineral content of the hulled sesame seed compared to the unhulled sesame seed differs significantly, specifically when you compare iron and calcium. One tbsp serving of hulled sesame seeds contains 5 mg of calcium and 0.51 mg of iron,vs. unhulled sesame seeds contains 88 mg of calcium and 1.31 mg of iron. The fat primarily consists of the heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. The hulled sesame seed is slightly higher in fat than the unhulled sesame seed because that portion of the seed has higher concentrations of fat. One tbsp serving of hulled sesame seeds contains 5 g of total fat, 0.7 g of saturated fat, 1.9 g of monounsaturated fat and 2.0 g of polyunsaturated fat vs. unhulled sesame seeds contains 4.5 g of total fat, 0.6 g of saturated fat, 1.6 g of monounsaturated fat and 1.9 g of polyunsaturated fat.

I have been consuming seeds for years. Unfortunately in the beginning not too many people knew (infact they still don't), even majority of physicians do not know that seeds like flax seed and sesame seed have no nutritional value unless;
1. Seeds are fresh, not old and rancid. Oils and supplements are worthless since goes rancid quickly,
2. Grinned and consumed within few days,
3. Kept in the freezer,
4. Kept in a dark place not exposed to light,
5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Homemade Bumble Bars, anyone? March 6, 2013
By Heather
Amazon Verified Purchase
So I bought these to make homemade bumble bars, which are made with normal light sesame seeds. The extra nutrition in the hulls here is a HUGE bonus - they don't taste tough or anything either, like flax seeds. I can't really tell the difference, outside of a pleasant nutty flavor addition. I'll buy these forever, lol.
