Auntie is 100% pure fun!,

Unlike the other individual who only read this play, and thought it was unplausable...I on the other hand got to see this show, and also have a copy of this play. While it may appear on printed page to be hard to swallow...onstage it was amazing to watch!!! I have not laughed so hard and so long as I did at this production. The show is totally a laugh riot from beginning to end. I have never been in a theatre and heard such hard laughter.I think the other reviewer misses the point when it comes to understanding the defination of farce. Which I have taken the liberty to write out Webster's Dictionary description. Farce: Laughable, comic, caricature, ridiculous, absurd, outrageous, perposterous. I think that says it all. In farce you already know the situation is unbelievable. Take Ray Cooney's smash London hit, Run For Your Wife. Any person with half a brain would figure out that the plot of that show would not hold up in the real world. But who cares, that's what laughter is all about. I would recommend this play to anyone who wants to just laugh and enjoy themselves. I admit, reading the play and watching live were two completely different experiences...but one thing is for sure, once this show got going it was a great ride right to the end. And I've seen "Black Comedy" it's nothing to shout about!

Funny but the implausibility is a big distraction,

I love farce as much as the next guy. It was the only reason why I bought this book. And while I recognize that the very nature of farce (and most drama for that matter) requires alot of coincidental and odd things to happen that would most definitely not happen in every day life. HOWEVER... This play pushes the envelope of believability to an extreme that I had to take a break from reading, my intelligence was so insulted. I loved the premise: a man comes back from his aunt's funeral only to discover she's won the lottery. I would have been ok with him dressing up as a woman... maybe even one other person pretending to be the aunt who got confused. But to have at least two characters in the play being dressed up in old ladies clothes and then having one of them delusionally think HE'S an old lady? It was just a little stupid. The outragous plot however distracted from an otherwise pretty good script. From word one the dialogue is pretty consistently funny and there are some great moments. But the bulk of act two is simply too proposterous to be swallowed. For those looking for a good farce I recommend Black Comedy written by Peter Schaffer. |
