Some of Boccherini's concertos for violoncello and orchestra are played by Tafelmusik using period instruments, which gives these sessions a feeling of freshness and authenticity. The sound quality of the recording is superb, and the playing is excellent.
The selections are outstanding. Boccherini writes inventive and beautiful melodies that seem to unfold effortlessly and organically. He allows the various instruments to alternate and recombine to create a variety of intriguing sound textures. Throughout, the listener is pleasantly surprised and delighted by the experience.
A more technical description of Boccherini's unconventional techniques are detailed in the liner notes by David Montgomery. The booklet also lists the specific instruments/makers used on the recording. After reading the booklet and listening to the CD, you might realize that Boccherini's triumph is that his inventiveness gives his music its timeless appeal and a modern sensibility.
Anyone interested in Italian baroque should DEFINITELY own this CD. Kudos to Sony Classical for putting together a first-class product. I give this recording the highest possible rating!

This was my first exposure to Boccherini's music (aside from his 'Minuet,' which can be found on practically any Baroque/Classical anthology release). It's a great disc offering some fantastic music.
Before hearing this disc, I never knew how talented Boccherini was. He tends to get lost in the shadows of Mozart and Haydn (and even C.P.E. Bach). That's unfortunate, because Boccherini was a talented composer whose works are enjoyable as well as substantive. Just listen to his Cello Concerto 476. It's incredible, as are the other pieces which Tafelmusik brings to life.
Sadly, this disc appears to be out-of-print. [...], it's definitely worth the small investment (assuming you can still find it!). There are other recordings of Boccherini's cello concertos (Naxos, Erato, Teldec) and symphonies (Philips, Hyperion).
The Naxos 2-volume collection of cello concertos (Vols 1 & 2) is a good deal [...], but the quality of the recording/playing simply cannot match the Sony release (although Naxos more often than not offers some first-rate recordings/interpretations). Philips offers a 2-disc set of Boccherini's symphonies (known as Op. 12); it also sounds great, especially for an ADD release . . . but Philips has always had great success with remastering analog recordings from its extensive archives).
Tafelmusik, as usual, shines on this Sony release. If you're new to Boccherini, this is a great place to start.

This recording is fantastic, as all of Anner Bylsma's recordings are.The cadenzas are amazing. This recording is truly a gem, and all cellists should hear it.
