Product Description

Amazon.com

This is one of those CDs that are hard to take out of the player, so wonderful is the music, accomplished the playing, and realistic the sound. Boccherini churned out music bursting with attractive melodies and splendid instrumental effects, though without quite the level of sophisticated development and emotional depth that would enable history to rank him on the Mozart-Beethoven level. Still, it would be a terrible shame to miss music of such winning charm. It's not just pretty, either, as witness the inventive string writing in the first movement of the fourth quartet of the set, wonderfully marked "allegro bizzarro." And the Larghetto of that work is expressive, as are the slow movements throughout. The Borciani Quartet is named for their teacher, the leader of the great Quartetto Italiano, and their performance is firmly in the hallowed tradition of that group: big-toned, alert to nuances, and flawlessly played. There's 79 minutes of pure delight on this disc, a bargain if ever there was one. --Dan Davis

This recording, (and the recording of the other two quartets from Op. 32 on 8.555042) is a bargain if you are captivated by Boccherini. I suppose he is an acquired taste, not so beloved by those who prefer Haydn's superior intellectual gifts. But as pure music, Boccherini's is wonderful.

The alternative set on Das Alte Werk (Telfunken), (which I have on LP), by Quartetto Esterhazy is much more characterful on original instruments. But that doesn't necessarily make it better.

These performances are somewhat more "modern" sounding, clean cut, virtuoso, lots of brio etc. Very much in the Italianite tradition, you might say.

People who already love Boccherini will probably buy both. If you haven't sampled Boccherini before, start here. The price is right!

Purchased this CD along with the NAXOS-Boccherini: String Quartets, Opp. 32 and 39. These are excellent String Quartets(SQs). After listening to and collecting many composer's SQs, I am convinced Boccherini was a genius in his own way. His SQs are different from the Viennese composers, Haydn, Mozart, Vanhal(Bohemian), and Dittersdorf, however they never lose their courtly elegance, grace, melody and beauty. That is the one thing you can say about Boccherini his sound is distinct and unique. If you enjoy these SQs you will enjoy his String Quintets. Admirers of 18th century music (the classical period) need to include these CDs in their collection especially at this price.

Boccherini is listed in the Guinness Book of Music Facts and Feats as "the most ingratiating composer." His sound is as aristocratic as Mozart.

This is a fine cd of fanciful and controlled excellence ! At times in you can hear a touch of whimsy and ferver, and at others a regression into and self reflection of feelings.

Such command of the works' highs and lows is achieved by the compositional genius that is Boccherini. Check out all his quintetts too. You can't go wrong with any selection by this composer.

Buy the rest of Opus 32 (#1-2) and Opus 39 on the other Naxos cd.

Good day my friend !

He has very busy music. The best thing is that he exploits all the instruments, and you can hear them all clearly, even the cello. They never bore you. Not even the slo movements, they are quite thematic and lyrical like mozart, but always fun and more elegant. Mozart threw that idea out to get melodramatic. This is the best quartet I ever bought.

This is a sample of a wonderful, gracious, gallant music, which any fan of classical music cannot avoid to have. It's a pure design, airy, like dance, with all that special poetry of the 18th century. It may not be so profound, but it sings to the beauty and happiness of the life.
Very well interpreted and the sound is very good.
I liked this CD so much that I sent another one to a friend that loves classic music.
