Editorial Reviews

Boccherini owes his celebrity to more than just the Minuet of his string quintet Op.11 No.5. This recording proves that fact with stunning brilliance: from the castanets of the Fandango to the much more Viennese style of the string quartet, the musicians of the Cuarteto Casals and their guests demonstrate the infinite creative resources of the composer. It culminates in the La musica notturna delle strade di Madrid (Night Music from the Streets of Madrid), a vivid example of musical realism in which, as Boccherini put it, the strict rules of counterpoint would be out of place.

A very pleasant CD with some very interesting music.

The two CDs look almost identical, so one must be a bit careful as to which version one wants to buy.

This music for me expresses every that was best from the early years of the Enlightenment.

I had previously considered Boccherini a not very interesting composer, based on his ubiquitous Minuet and his Cello concerto in B-flat (which I have heard only in the heavily arranged and Romanticized version by Friedrich Grützmacher, not in its original version) - until I heard this disc. This CD could almost be labeled "The Best of Boccherini" as it contains not only the String quintet in E Major from which the famous Minuet derives, but also three other string quintets that feature some of his most popular tunes, including the famous String Quintet in C major, "La musica notturna delle stade di Madrid". But unlike most "Best of" compilations, all works are here performed in their entirety, which means that the Minuet is not singled out of its proper context, as has been the usual practice these days.

And what wonderful performances! Cuarteto Casals plays each phrase with greath warmth and tonal beauty, and there are no harsh sounds. Still the playing is fresh and lively. Although some listeners might consider the "realism" of the C major quintet somewhat banal, as it attempts to describe in music the nocturnal street life in Madrid around the composer's time, with performances of this order, this does not matter a bit. (It is an interesting fact that Boccherini himself had doubts about the worth of this quintet on similar reasons, and subsequently withdraw it from publication, much to his publisher's dismay.)

The recording, made in the Teldex studio in Berlin, is ideal in its naturalness, warmth and clarity. The recording is close, but not uncomfortably so - in fact, this is one of the best recorded and engineered chamber music CDs I have heard for a long time.

This CD would be ideal if you want only one Boccherini CD in your collection.

Ce disque est soyeux et royal !

These pieces by Boccherini are fun. I'm amazed at this music because it doesn't seem to fit its period (late 18th Century); it sounds older but at the same time is delightfully happy and fun. This is great dance music. A very pleasant CD with some very interesting music. The sound quality is first rate and the players (Cuarteto Casals) are terrific.

The first piece on this CD was the one I was looking for. I had heard the music while watching the film, "Master and Commander", and wanted to have it for my collection. It has more than met my expectations. The rest of the album is very pleasant and adds to my knowledge of the classical music of this time. Actually back then it was not classical music but the music of the day.

This music for me expresses every that was best from the early years of the Enlightenment. It is gorgeous, reasonable and just makes a man feel good to hear it. No saccharine goo, it's just "right" without all of the muddiness you find in Schubert or Tchaikovsky.
