Three discs-61,45,64 minutes each approximately. The sound is pretty good to good overall, considering how and when these tracks were recorded. The tracks are (very) roughly arranged according to genre-funk, soul, gospel. But styles of each are incorporated and can be heard on all three discs. The packaging is very impressive. I only wish that the discs were better protected in their sleeves-which are a roughish cardboard-a soft plastic lining (or something) would have been nice. On the back of each sleeve is a listing of songs and artists-which is nice to have for a quick look at whose singing. There's two booklets included, along with a reproduction of a handmade postcard, and a small brochure advertising the record label. The first booklet tells the story of Boddie (pronounced "bo-dee") Records and associated labels. The second booklet has alphabetical track by track information-very helpful and enlightening when you're dealing with basically unknown artists. Both booklets have a number of photographs from the period. All the above is tucked inside a wallet-style, with thick hardback covers. Everything then slips inside a very substantial hard slipcase. All in all, a nice package.

Fans of obscure funk, soul, and gospel music will find this collection to be a treasure chest of good to fine music. Is it all of equal value? No. But even the weaker tracks are worth hearing. It's interesting that in the city where the Rock and Roll Museum is located, the Boddie label is all but forgotten. Whats here are three discs of funk, soul, and gospel music from the mid/late 60's into the 70's (the majority), and a few from the 80's.

The first disc (on the Soul Kitchen Records label) contains some good funky music, including a couple of instrumentals.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves 10 stars!! February 1, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The other reviews describe well what's going on here. Numero does the hands-down best job of rescuing great to pretty darn good American music from total obscurity. They've been doing the Smithsonian's job, and better than they ever did. This set is fantastic, starting with the concept, the imaginative packaging, and the music is consistently cool, often wonderful, sometimes revelatory. Numero's ethos and productions are nothing short of heroic. They invest a lot of time, money, creative thought and sweat in producing collections of no-name artists from labels long forgotten. Not a good business plan on the face of it, but clearly a labor of profound love for the music, and making the statement in a big way that un- and under-sung underdogs could also, at times, hit it out of the park. Numero chronicles the work of those who, living on luck, reached for the sun (to borrow a couple Bukowskian lines) and for a brief moment, got a piece of it. This collection, like all their others, a definite must for the serious music collector. And to support their efforts, you gotta buy it, not burn it!

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning..absolutley stunning December 23, 2011

first off ..i have to take my hat off,get on my knee and bow down to the people who run this endlessly impeccable record company...these people work in the tradition of the great harry smith, spending the months and hours searching and tracking down totally obscure, unheard off independent american soul funk gospel labels run by black americans,, in the 1960,s and 1970,s,,the equivalent to the NUGGETTS ,PEBBLES GARAGE ROCK SERIES..or the great harry smith collections...but let me continue..these guys have found and sourced and remastered a series of utterly brilliant recordings that have been only ever heard by relativly few..this stuff was doomed to be lost and forgotten to track it all down, remaster it and then research it and present it all with wonderful packaging, historical notes and interviews is just awesome....but on top of all that the music contained is just brilliant...soul..funk ..gospel...PLEASE IF ITS YOUR BAG BUY THIS RECORD..SUPPORT THESE GUYS ,THE WORK THEIR DOING IS JUST AWESOME....

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! January 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Finally the reason the rock and roll hall of fame went to Cleveland.

An outstanding (and astounding) compilation which will have you lament all that time you wasted listening to the top ten.
My favorite release of the year, and one done with considerable skill, respect and love. Jim Linderman Dull Tool Dim Bulb.
