Book Description

October 1, 2006
What if you could cultivate the mind of a bodhisattva?one who has dedicated one's life to the benefit of others? According to Pema Ch?dr?n?best-selling author and American-born Buddhist nun?you can. On Bodhisattva Mind, she examines sheshin, or ?guarding alertness, ? and the other qualities of mind we need to develop on the path to enlightenment. ?We all have a consciousness that knows what helps and what causes harm, ? teaches Ani Pema. ?With this same ability, we can ?tame our minds, ? and extricate ourselves from suffering.? A practicum of insights and meditations from this cherished teacher, Bodhisattva Mind shows us how to connect with the spacious, clear, unbiased nature of our minds, and experience the joy of complete freedom.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Pema Chödrön has authored several books including When Things Fall Apart (Shambhala, 2000), Comfortable with Uncertainty (Shambhala, 2002), and No Time to Lose (Shambhala, 2005). She is resident teacher at Gampo Abbey Monastery in Nova Scotia.

From AudioFile

In a refreshing recorded seminar, the revered Buddhist nun explains the core teachings of an ancient text--Shantiveda's THE WAY OF THE BODHISATTVA. Chodron answers heartfelt questions, largely from people trying to reconcile their individual conflicts with addressing the needs of others. Rather than sounding otherworldly, her peaceful tone and relaxed grasp of Buddhist teachings are inviting and familiar. Laughing frequently and feeling at home in front of a large audience, she speaks a language that listeners everywhere will appreciate. Almost thrilling in their simplicity and generosity, the segments of Shantiveda's text that she and others read to the audience teach the disciplines of calming one's mind and making sacrifices to serve others. 5.0 out of 5 stars holding nothing back, January 10, 2007

Provocative, witty, wise and compassionate - Pema Chodrun is a delight to listen to. In this series she decodes Shanti Deva's classic Buddhist text from its eight century origins and numerous translations into contemporary language. As always, she is accessible and insightful, holding nothing of herself back. She has a gift of articulating the movements and proclivities of the Western mind in a way that makes us cringe with recognition and laugh at our endless self absorption.
I live in Australia so it is unlikely that i will ever see her in action. This CD series is a wonderful substitute.

Yes, I realize that saying Pema rocks may seem irreverent, but Pema Chodrin makes eastern philosophy accessible to the western mind. And, she has a sense of humor! I listen to her each night before I go to sleep and learn another gem each time. Her approach to spirituality is one of great acceptance, compassion and non-judgment - certainly things the world could stand to embrace.

I listen to this (and other Pema CDs) driving to and from work. I laugh, I cry and best of all I'm learning to be a better person. I "ditto" another person when I say...Pema Rocks!
