This review is from: Bodhran, 16"x3.5", Tune, Blue, T-bar
This is my first bodhrán, but I have played many other drums and instruments. I wanted to buy one that was reasonable quality but not very expensive to see how I did with it before investing very much. I am very pleased with this one. It is well made, sounds great, comes with a tipper, and is tunable - all at a price that is very hard to beat. I have read that a bodhrán should have at least these three characteristics: it should have rounded "corners" where the head is held tightly to the frame, so as not to tear it (this one does); it should have a clean seam where the ends of the frame meet (mine is so nice and tight, I have a lot of trouble even finding it); and it should have no tacks backing out or indications of tearing where they hold the head (mine passes here as well). Overall, I give it very high marks. The tipper that comes with it is plenty good, though I prefer one that is more contoured with smaller knobs. Any tipper can be made to give a more secure grip just by wrapping a rubber band around it (thanks go to the phenomenal online teacher, Michelle Stewart, for this tip). As a starter drum, I would call this one excellent and even better than expected.
