I finished this book several days ago but it is still in my head. Maybe it's just the lonesome pull of nostalgia but I tend to think it is more than that. Greenwood has wonderfully captured the socially charged nature of the 1960's and brought it all back to life. Of a world where women like Billie and Eva were forced into lifestyles that doomed them to drudgery and unhappiness. A world where brutish men ruled over women for no reason other than it had always been so. But also a world where courageous women like Billie and Eva began to insist that their right to be happy be held equal to everyone else.

Bodies of Water illustrates the heroic contribution made to our society by women like Billie and Eva. Like so many of the iconic figures of the 1960's, Greenwood's characters teach us all that there are different drum beats. That people can stray from what for most is a preferred path, but by no means the only path. That people have a right to find their own sort of happiness. Greenwood's work illustrates that in most respects conformity isn't a value of our society, as much as it is just a bad habit that we need to break.

Greenwood has written a wonderful story. Even now the story maintains a hold on me, but it's not as though I'm trying to get away. I'm enjoying the afterglow. I feel connected to the characters; to their lives of that time and place. To their sadness mixed with their hard fought joy. To the complexity of it all, as well as the simplicity. A true achievement of American literature.

This is a brave, haunting love story with the breathless pacing of a mystery novel. Ostensibly the story of forbidden love between two women in an era when such a thing was not only considered a crime, but a sin, BODIES OF WATER also catalogs the claustrophobia of being a stay-at-home mom in the 1960's when your husband's word was law. Despite the harsh, almost Shakespearean tragic story line, Greenwood writes with such empathy for all of her characters that readers are left with a feeling of hope--and a sense of gratitude that the world has, indeed, changed for the better.

I feel ill-equipped to find the vocabulary to describe this tender, heart-wrenching novel that could only have happened in that time period, when women HAD to listen to their husbands, were not cherished, had no voice in the marriage. Well, I'm sure there were the occasional few who were treated equally; however, society had very strict standards for what was accepted and what was unusual. The book is set in the 1960's in the beginning. If the book took place in 2013, the loving relationship between Eva and Billie would flourish---they would be able to support themselves and not depend on horrible husbands like Freddie and Ted; society would accept their love and not consider it despicable and unnatural.
We've come a long way, baby!
AWESOME BOOK!

“Oh My Goodness That Was Good,” That is what I keep saying to myself when I think back on this book. If I had to sum it up with one word, it would be consuming. From the very first page I was hooked. When I was away from it, I thought about it, thought about what the characters were going to do next. It took me only a few days to finish this, and it would have been less if I didn’t have to take care of my kids or sleep. As I write this I am trying to put my finger on exactly what I loved so much.

At it’s heart, this is a story about a friendship between two women. Even though Billie really didn’t want to make a new best friend, she couldn’t help being drawn to Eva. They had so much in common; kids the same age and husbands who had a darker side. Each found that person to be absolutely honest with. We have all had friends like that, ones that just fit us perfectly. That friendship made this novel so so readable. I could totally identify with their day to day activities, even considering that they did these homemaking activities differently in 1960. The camaraderie was the same.

I also loved the writing. It was so accessible. I never noticed that I was reading words on a page. From the beginning, I felt as though I was hovering right above these women, watching their story unfold in detail. From sitting at their table folding laundry and planning girl scout meetings, to the more desperate and private moments of their friendship. The writing was so good, that when the topics slipped out of my comfort zone, I still could not stop reading.

The wonderful writing created “real” characters, that you either loved or hated, or both. I loved Eva the best, she was so alive, so much fun. I can’t imagine not wanting a friend just like her.

I do lots of reading and I have to admit that this is one of my top picks of the year. It is beautifully written and there is no doubt that you will not want to part with the characters when you are through reading.I don't want to give anything away but I will say that you will keep turning the pages to find out when the secret that these two women share will be revealed because you know that the results will be catastrophic. It will also cause a tear or two to be shed. A five star read for sure!
