A thunderstorm knocked out our Breville, which we liked very much, but when I went to replace it I found that the price had increased and shopped for a more economical replacement, settling on this one from Bodum.

Since color had been a problem for others, and wasn't important to us given our neutral kitchen design, I chose black. We could not have been more delighted.

This is a knockout design, both functionally and aesthetically.

Most important, this thing makes predictably wonderful toast: perfect toast, nutty and sweet. It's as if we'd never tasted toast before! Controls are sensibly located, clearly labeled, and easy to read. If you want to conceal the cord, there's a clever way to do it that doesn't intrude on the design. The rubberized surface doesn't attract fingerprints and is easy to clean. Whoever designed this toaster clearly thought about how people used toasters, pondered how to improve the experience, and put that learning to work. Its only shortcoming might be slots that are a tad narrower - but just a tad - than some other toasters, but this is a problem only for those not willing to trim an occasional bagel.

Visitors looking for the toaster in your kitchen may hesitate for a moment, thinking that your Bodum toaster's some sort of new iPod deck -- it's that different (and handsome).

After looking at many toasters and reading many reviews, I purchased the Bodum Bistro 2-slice toaster to replace our aging single extra wide-extra long slot toaster that died.

I got into trouble immediately with my better half over the "oval" style of this toaster. Be forewarned...if you prefer a traditional style, better pass on this one. I convinced my spouse to give it a chance based on all the wonderful reviews as to how great it toasted bread.

After it arrived and we started to use it, it was clear I was in trouble again. None of the breads we buy fit in the slot without surgery or using our hand to force it down in the slot. Lest you think we buy weird sized breads, think again. We typically buy a popular sliced multi-grain, a sliced sourdough, and a sliced French bread. The edges of the two latter breads had to be trimmed (scissors work fine) to fit the bread in the slot. The multi-grain fit a bit snugly in the slot opening so it had to be pushed down by hand in the slot. Thomas muffins fit when sliced in half with a knife and toast OK but toasting needs monitoring.

For all that was heralded about this unit's toasting prowess, we found that it toasted about the same as our toaster that died. We are picky about the degree of toasting so with our old toaster, we were popping the bread up once or twice to check the progress of the piece we were toasting. This practice was also required with the Bodum although I finally found a heat setting that allowed me to "trust" the toaster with my multi-grain which, once toasted, shrank in size slightly so it popped up normally.

After three weeks of failing to find enough reasons to be happy with this toaster, we decided to return it. Five stars to Amazon's return system!!

On a positive note, the quality of the unit is impressive: fit, finish, materials, and operation. If you only toast "real standard" bread sizes (think Wonder bread) and you like an interesting but different design, this unit will please you.

I gave it two stars because for the reasons noted - it didn't work out for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a toaster that toasts!!, January 5, 2011

This review is from: Bodum 10709-01US Bistro 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel and Bun Warmer, Black (Kitchen)
After purchasing several toasters over the last couple of years, I found myself reading yet another review on a toaster here on Amazon. A reviewer mentioned their frustration with that toaster and said they were giving up and just buying a Bodum. I had no idea Bodum was making toasters and immediately looked it up, read the reviews and ordered for next day delivery! I was so frustrated with our DeLonghi/Kitchen Aid/Cuisinart toasters and needed to pop the bread down twice and even turning it around to get an even toast. Not the biggest stress in life, but I mean, with all the technological advances, why is the toaster stuck in the past...wait the past had better toasters than we are able to get today....UNTIL NOW!!!

I don't normally write reviews, but this toaster warranted taking the time. It perfectly toasted my english muffin in one shot (no turning, retoasting, etc.!!) Wow, I can put bread in, press down the lever and toast pops up, evenly browned and beautiful! Oh yeah, that's what toasters are supposed to do, I had forgotten!

Consumer Reports rates this well, but not number one. I've tried the number ones and they didn't work half as well as this toaster. It doesn't take up alot of counter space and the rubberized sides mean no burning of your hands when you touch the toaster when in use.

BOTTOM LINE: BEST TOASTER I'VE OWNED IN MANY MANY YEARS!

Good quality and seems to work very well. Was a little disappointed to find the color wasn't quite as pictured. Not vibrant red but more brick or orange red.

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment, March 2, 2011

This review is from: Bodum 10709-01US Bistro 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel and Bun Warmer, Black (Kitchen)
With the beautiful design and Bodum reputation for quality, I expected to love this toaster. But it is a huge disappointment - great form, lousy function. 1) It does not toast the bread evenly; the bottom half of my bread slices are consistently darker than the top half. 2) The slots are not deep enough - the top edge of a standard-size slice peeks up above the heating element and, therefore, goes untoasted. 3) The slots are not wide enough - have to trim bagel halves to get them to fit. My search for a great toaster continues. Just ordered the KitchenAid KMT222OB 2-Slice Toaster (fingers crossed) and will return the Bodum.

p.s. Actually, this is the second Bodum toaster I'm returning. The pop-up warming rack on the first one I purchased was defective.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, January 9, 2011

This review is from: Bodum 10709-01US Bistro 2-Slice Toaster with Bagel and Bun Warmer, Black (Kitchen)
Received the toaster about 3 months ago and it has ceased to work already... It only heat on on half of the toast and has stopped holding the toast down at all...

When it was working I was fairly happy with it. It was a lot bulkier then I had imagined from the listing here on amazon. It is a fairly large toaster. A pro to this design is that the exterior of the toaster remains comfortable to touch even when in use.

Have to figure out what I will do with broken toaster now since Amazon's return window is closed.... Dang...

When my last toaster konked out, I wanted something decidedly different, but with great looks and one of the features of the toaster I ditched, the ability to do some 'top-toasting'. When I saw the Bodum name, right away I thought 'coffee or tea'. However I wasn't disappointed, getting this gem. The black covering on the outside, which I was under the impression was 'paint', is actually a rubberlike insulation. I was very pleased with this because of not looking glossy, instead rugged. Something else really neat, it has two lights - red and blue. The red light is for toasting and the added blue (blue+red at once light up), is for thawing frozen foods, like pancakes or waffles. The toaster does a beautiful job handling thawing foods evenly. Now to the top feature. To the rear of the top of the toaster is a small place you 'push' and the top pops up. Very much like the old toaster I had, but I find this more accessible and easier to pop up, with no resistance. Yet, once engaged, it doesn't fall down either! I like my flatbread tortillas lightly toasted and this is the main purpose for this gadget. One mistake I made (and I don't think I should have done this) is placing the flatbread so the whole of it is flopping over the whole top. It cut off 'venting', which created an oven effect. A tiny portion of the top of the toaster 'melted'. Nothing which can be seen, except if one looks up close and scrutinizes the top surface. I haven't had further problem, making sure I leave venting spaces on all sides of the tortilla. Otherwise, everything I expected and more I receive from this product. Overall I use it mainly for frozen pancakes and flatbread tortillas. Hmm, I wonder if it will dry my cycling socks? :)

All I can say is BUY THIS TOASTER. The bread, any bread, comes out quite evenly brown without those tell tale stripes of dark and light. Completely toasted bread. What a joy. And the metal lift that rises up to allow you to warm a biscuit or a crossaint or roll is a nice and very clever addition and it works too. All in all an amazing toaster that I would have spent more for to buy. So this is a great deal. Must mention the design. Very good. And the sides stay cool to the touch even with frequent use say during breakfast. No burnt fingers moving the toaster about the counter to make room for this or that. BUY THIS TOASTER. Terrific!
