I bought this to use in the car if I'm running late and don't have time for coffee at home, but I love it so much I use it all the time. 2.0 out of 5 stars Ok for home and a single cup, but it doesn't travel well
Being a commuter to an office where everyone else is satisfied with burnt coffee, I was optimistic this would solve my caffeine needs. Alas, while the coffee this tiny french press (enough for a healthy mug) brews is delicious, it does leak!

Because I have a wonderful, reliable 8-cup (read "two mug") glass Bodum at home, I'll keep this at work. If you buy...

I bought this to use in the car if I'm running late and don't have time for coffee at home, but I love it so much I use it all the time. The coffee is great, and I haven't had any of the problems some other people have had - the coffee keeps very hot, there are no leaks, etc. If you just need a single cup of coffee and don't want to be bothered putting on a pot, this is perfect. It's great for traveling, too - I throw it in my bag with enough coffee for the trip and no longer have to worry about insipid hotel coffee. I'll be buying another one as my husband has started using it for tea, so it's useful for that, too. All in all, one of the best impulse buys I ever made.

I'm editing my review several months later to add some tips for those having problems. You don't need to screw the top on tightly, in fact if you do it will leak. Just turn until it stops. Also, I would suggest not cleaning the plastic container in the dishwasher as the very hot water can make it crack, even on the top shelf. The press itself is dishwasher safe. Last, make sure to use a coarse enough grind of coffee, otherwise it is difficult to press.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Coffee but..., March 5, 2002

I have to agree with both of the reviewers here; it makes great coffee and it leaks. I've had mine for about 2 weeks and already there's moisture between the 2 plastic walls from the top seal. But--since it fits in my bag/desk/car and makes better coffee than I'd get in most drivethroughs, I'm just going to trade it in and hope I have better luck with #2 than the other reviewer. Besides, the idea of a totally portable little coffee pot is pretty cool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed, June 4, 2003

I was looking for a small french press and a travel mug so I wouldn't have to deal with a coffee maker, filters etc. in the morning and saw this. Perfect. Even less steps and clean up. I had no problem with the lid leaking and it kept the coffee nice and hot. Once the press was down there was no leakage back into the main cup, my main concern. I even turned it over once I finished my coffee to test the seal and the press kept all the grinds and liquid in place. No problems using this as a true travel mug.

If anyone's used the thermal Bodum travel press, please write a review. Does it also leak?

1.0 out of 5 stars I had to update my review..., January 7, 2004
This review is from: Bodum Logo Travel Press (Kitchen)
Since writing the review below, the Bodum Logo Travel Press has begun to leak around the seal where the top connects to the cup. This is the single biggest failing in any travel mug, as it virtually ensures that you will spill coffee on EVERYTHING, including your papers, your shirt, your tie and your hands. I've only been using the travel press for three weeks, and I would hardly call usage very vigorous... I use it on the way to work, use it throughout the day at work, wash it and then carry it back home in my bag. The combination of the garish logos and catch phrases and the leaking seal make this travel press a total failure and a waste of money. I only wish there was an option for zero stars. But then, I also wish there was the option of going back in time and not buying this piece of junk in the first place.

Here were my initial comments, prior to the start of the leaking:
Some grounds sneak past the edge of the press and wind up in your mouth, but I won't blame the cup as much as my own ignorance in buying fine-ground coffee when even a drunken babboon knows you are only supposed to use coarse ground coffee in a french press.

My main problem with this cup is that it has two red "bodum" labels as well as the obnoxious phrase "give up bad coffee for good" written on it in large white script (the better to stand out against the dark coffee inside). This transforms you into a mobile Bodum advertising unit. The effect is that it feels rather like you are carrying around a cup you picked up for free at a product fair or something and not like you actually paid money for the thing. Since I have almost no shame, I still use it all the time, and just try to hide the most egregious of the writing with my hand. So, even though the cup works and has been good enough to use every day, I am only giving it two stars because I resent paying for the privilege to advertise for a company.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not intended for travel, May 3, 2002

I have this coffee press and wonder if it was actually designed for travel? Not only does water/coffee sludge leak into the once-empty chamber between the plastic walls, but if you try to drink out of it, you're just as likely to get coffee in your shorts as you are to get it in your mouth. The lid falls off, it drips, it's really quite a mess. I use this press to make a single cuppa in the morning and then pour it into a real traveling mug, thereby saving my pants (and etc.) from an early-morning coffee disaster.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just the ticket for a single serving of coffee on the go, May 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bodum Logo Travel Press (Kitchen)
I used to use a single serving glass coffee press but got tired of washing it everyday. I now own five of these, one for every work day. It's perfect for a single serving of good coffee on the go. And, owning five of them means I can rinse it out and wash them all in a full dishwasher at the end of the week.

I have used these presses for a couple of years now and have gone through a number of sets of them. They've lasted roughly a year or, sometimes, longer for me before finally cracking. The chance of cracking from adding boiling water can be greatly diminished by (as the directions say) adding a small amount of the boiling water and waiting a bit before continuing to fill the cup. Using course ground coffee minimizes chances of getting loose gounds floating in the coffee but it can also sometimes happen if you insert the plunger at an angle. I've never had any of the lids leak except when, on ocassion, I found I hadn't screwed on the lid completely. Finally, cleaning them in the dishwasher sometimes allows moisture to enter between the walls of the cup through the lip but this doesn't seem to cause any problems.

I would recommend the Bodum Travel Press, though if you plan on only using one of them on a daily basis, you may be better off with a more durable glass press and a regular go-cup.

2.0 out of 5 stars 'if it's too good to be true'........, January 23, 2004

The concept of French Press coffee to 'GO'is a dream come true for a coffee lover.
HOWEVER, I have yet to have found the correct temperature of hot water to pour into the cup without it cracking and traveling up the sides of the double insulated clear cup or TOO cool to have tepid brown liquid with no flavor.
I've tried four cups and all have cracked. Until the company improves the cup material, I'll have to settle for something else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea/poor construction, March 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Bodum Logo Travel Press (Kitchen)
I was so excited to find this product because I wanted to have good coffee in my office, not the awful stuff they buy here on bulk and keep for months. But it started leaking between the layers right away, which was a big dissappointment. I think the clear plastic it is made of may be the wrong choice of material. I really hope they come out with a new one and use a better material. I would buy it in a second.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yeah...it leaks really bad, October 15, 2002

Great concept. The problem is that the lid is hard to get on and sometimes you think its on when its not. It also has the leaking problem described. It leaks in between the layers and ultimately outside the tumbler itself. Starbucks is marketing a stainless steel version with a screw-on lid that could be the best of both worlds. I'm sure its made by Bodum also but it appears to be very heavy duty.
