Amazon.com Review

Many products are touted for their uniqueness, or how they're revolutionizing this or that, but few live up the hype. Bodum's Santos coffeemaker is different, as it really is unlike other coffeemakers on the market. First off, it uses an electric vacuum brewing process, and secondly it lets you watch the whole thing. Fill the jug with cold filtered water, and place it on the power base. Then twist the funnel onto the jug. Next, add fresh coffee (a handy scoop is included) to the funnel and press the start button. As the water heats up to boiling, the vacuum created between the two parts moves water up the funnel, where the hot water and coffee mix together. Once the correct brewing time has elapsed, the heat turns off and the coffee drains back into the carafe through a nylon filter (nylon doesn't affect the taste of the coffee like paper filters).

In this system, coffee and hot water mingle for the optimum time, providing the best-tasting coffee possible. The process takes around 11 minutes for up to 12 cups of coffee (the minimum amount of coffee you can brew is four cups). The jug and the funnel are both made of sturdy polycarbonate, and the funnel is dishwasher-safe. (Clean the jug by hand, as it's not submersible.) Other features include a 40-ounce capacity, a 24-hour timer, a slide-out funnel holder, a keep-warm feature, and an automatic shutoff feature. Neither the bottom of the jug nor the top of the power base gets hot during brewing, because the heating element is in the middle of the jug's base.

There are a couple of things to remember when using the electric Santos. Always use fresh coffee, ground medium, for best results (stay away from using coffee from a can or powdered coffee), and use one level scoop of ground coffee per cup. So, for a full 12-cup pot, you'll use 12 scoops. After testing, if the coffee is too strong, begin tapering off the number of scoops. Also, remember that there will always be a small amount of water left in the coffee pot during the brewing process. This is a normal safety feature.

When cleaning the Santos, don't scrub the nylon filter clean--it should be rinsed under warm water. The coffee grounds from the upper section can be scooped out into the garbage can or compost using a common kitchen spatula. Then, simply wash the top section with dish soap and warm water. Also rinse the coffee pot with warm water as soon as you are finished drinking coffee. After rinsing, leave the lid open and let the coffee pot air dry. Every so often, clean the pot with a basic de-liming agent.

The Santos also recently won a prestigious gold Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) in the consumer products division. Award-winners are selected by the Industrial Designers Society of America. There were 1,260 entries from around the world in the contest, and only 44 gold awards were given. --A.J. Rathbun

The water mixes with the grounds, and is gently heated to develop the coffee's full aroma and flavor. Features a 24-hr. programmable timer, keep-warm function, auto shutoff, slide-out funnel holder and a built-in nylon filter for fresher-tasting coffee. Constructed of durable polycarbonate and stainless steel, the machine is simple to assemble and quick to clean. 1200 watts. Imported. 12Hx8Wx10L".

5.0 out of 5 stars Revised Review, November 20, 2001
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bodum 3000-10USAA Electric Santos 12-Cup Coffeemaker With Timer, Clear (Kitchen)
I originally gave this pot a rating of 1 star but would like to change it to 5 stars. After a very minor correction, the Bodum-3000 now makes an excellent & rich cup of coffee. I had originally complained about its producing a thin, weak brew but have since discovered that this was due to the silicon band preventing contact with the heating base. It took 2 seconds to remove this band and the result is that the brewing process was lengthened by a couple of minutes. I could immediately taste the difference--what was once dishwater became GREAT coffee. Bodum contacted me by email & was extremely helpful, offering to do whatever it takes to satisfy me. So, I now enthusiastically recommend the Bodum Santos 3000, both for the wonderful coffee & customer service!

4.0 out of 5 stars More like 4.5: excellent coffee, but a couple of areas could be improved, October 31, 2005
This review is from: Bodum 3000-10USAA Electric Santos 12-Cup Coffeemaker With Timer, Clear (Kitchen)
First, this pot makes excellent coffee. It is better than the coffee offered at most coffee shops, and it's cheaper to make your own. In addition, the coffee is good and hot, just like coffee is supposed to be. It is more convenient to use most of the time than a French press, too, and much better than any drip coffee maker I've ever used.

We did receive a defective unit at first, after a couple of weeks the programming went south and didn't hold the coffee in the upper part long enough. Amazon sent us another unit; it's nearly two years old and works as designed.

As others have noted, this isn't the easiest unit to clean. This difficulty and the initial problem we had makes me knock it down a half star.

As for some of the comments here in the reviews, I'd really take them with a grain of salt. While the design and manufacture of this unusual coffee maker must have been a challenge, the physics of a vacuum pot aren't exactly rocket science (nor are the basics of how to make great coffee) but you'd think it was magic or something from reading some of the stuff here. My opinions, for they are worth: don't perform any of the modifications recommended online unless suggested directly by the manufacturer. Most of the ideas I've read here (cutting the tube down ¼ inch to extend brewing time, for example) make no sense to me.

Also, this is made of tough polycarbonate plastic and is anything but delicate. Trust me, if it was a delicate piece of equipment my wife would have trashed 10 of them by now....

Anyway, in summary: a good electric vacuum pot that makes a great cup of coffee and is reasonably easy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best cup of coffee east of the Amazon, June 19, 2003
This review is from: Bodum 3000-10USAA Electric Santos 12-Cup Coffeemaker With Timer, Clear (Kitchen)
I first saw the Bodum 3000 at a birthday party and was intrigued-it was fun to watch the coffee being made (doesn't take much to entertain me)and the coffee was delicious! Before I even needed a new coffeepot I ordered the Bodum- it is sleek in design, minimalist in style and a little pretentious. I don't mind the handwashing of the pot- I hand wash my good copper pan. Coffee grounds don't get me down. And when you want a really good cup of coffee- this is the coffe pot for you! What fun to bring it out for company and watch their amazement as you make and then pour them the best cup of java they have ever had!
