5.0 out of 5 stars Great kettle. great price
I've had this kettle for about 1 & 1/2 years without having any electrical or scale build-up problems. I use it 1 to 4 times per day, it boils water faster than the microwave and takes very little counter space, stores easily in cupboard. I use filtered water from my refrigerator dispenser, not tap water. My mom, who can't stand counter clutter either (she constantly...

Good while it worked, but that was only for about 5 months. The 'on' switch started flickering from time to time, and now it doesn't work at all.
That's why I'm here online... shopping for a replacement!

My mom, who can't stand counter clutter either (she constantly tries to give away her microwave and other small appliances to family/friends when they visit) liked it so much that I got her one and hers is going strong after one year of constant use.

I do agree that the lid leaks steam near the handle (usually only a problem when you fill to max line) and you need to watch where you grip, occasionally I've also had issues with a little bit of water leakage from the base. I always make sure the lid is locked in place before turning it on, and it always shuts off at boil, no problems with the lid lock either. My mom's has worked the same. I probably wouldn't let anyone younger than a teenager use it on their own, but you could say that for most appliances.

I guess with any electrical appliance there are lemons out there, but you also have to factor in personal usage habits and possibly bad or inadequate home wiring. For example I've had problems with electrical appliance/equipment burnouts in older poorly wired apartments that cleared up when I moved to a newer, correctly wired home.

I recommend this product if you want a well-priced, compact electric water kettle that wears well and is also easy to take along if you travel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A sweet, little kettle for the price, February 8, 2005

This review is from: Bodum 5410-03USA Mini Ibis Electric Water Kettle, White (Kitchen)
The Bodum 5410-03USA Mini Ibis Electric Water Kettle does everything it is supposed to do and quickly. I keep a gallon container of spring water under my desk and no longer make frequent trips to the kitchen to boil water in the microwave. My only complaint is that the steam leaks from underneath the cover, which is very close to the handle. The first time I used the kettle, I burned my hand, but grip the handle a little lower now.

Otherwise, the design is good, spare, and the cord is adequately long (though I wish they'd develop a cordless version). I see no problem with the cover. I suppose, as another reviewer mentioned, that one could let it fall into the carafe, but it is easy enough to avoid doing so; it *does* have a locking mechanism, after all.

I'd used these kinds of kettles when traveling abroad. Usually hotel rooms in the U.K. and Asia have these instead of coffee pots. The water boils very quickly and the entire unit is cool to the touch. This one is the perfect size for a couple or where space is limited. It also comes in a larger model. Water boils very quickly. No need to fire-up the stove or microwave.

This will be the second Mini Ibis I have purchased. The first is still going strong and I would like one in the office. Although a few of the other reviewers seem to have had some problems with this item my experience has been only good. The Mini Ibis heats quickly, shuts off reliably and has a somewhat longer cord than many of the other electric kettles on the market (much easier to reach existing outlets without an extension cord). As an added bonus its relatively small "foot-print" makes it easy to fit into limited spaces such as are found in many offices and apartments. Had my experience with my first Mini Ibis not been good I certainly wouldn't be buying a second one. Given the proper care needed by any electrical appliance used with water this unit has proven reliable and convenient. I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone looking for a very reasonably priced and functional little electric kettle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent boiler, August 27, 2005

I had mine for 10 months now. Its been a real life saver. The way it works is that you put water in there, click the red button and it starts working...really fast. When the water is boiling it switches off automatically. I ended up using it not only for coffee/tea, but for speed boiling water to cook anything from rice and pasta to stews ...etc. The exterior does heat up and steam does escape it, but why would you want to put your hands on it when its boiling the water? I don't know. For the price Its a great bargain and it works well for me.

The kettle is cute and convenient for workplace-cube use by one person. However, I just got this a couple of months ago, and the nickel plating is already wearing off the element, exposing some nasty looking corrosion and leaving chunks of metal in my water! This can't be healthy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still going strong!, January 29, 2005

My roommate has one of these which is used several times daily, and has been used for the past two years without problems. Doing the math, that's several hundred times without problems! The advantages of this are that it boils FAST, has automatic shutoff, and holds a good amount of water (27 oz). Things I don't like are the lid, which can sometimes leak steam, and that the element is exposed, which could form deposits easily with hard water. I still definately recommend this, as I've had other electric kettles that simply don't compare to this, especially at this price.

1. Cute design, yes.
2. Small footprint, yes.
3. Faulty design: lid may fall in because it's oval, not circular like man-holes; steam leaks because it has no steam guard.
4. Longevity short: yes. My unit lasted 1 yr and the shutoff failed to switch it off with consequent fire hazard.

I wouldn't risk again to burn my fingers or my house.
